Looking through the forum the one and maybe only thing that everybody agrees on (other then non led angel eyes) is that the stock sound system is terrible in our cars. I looked at the bavarian sound works website and they have nothing to help us. So my question is two fold, Has anyone attempted any aftermarket changes to stereo system and if not does anyone want to work with me or in a group to see what can be done? I think if we put half as much effort into this as some members have put into the angel eyes issue we might just come up with a way to make this car sound as good as my 95 lexus.;)

upgrading the sound system isn't rocket science with the stock L7 system.

Things that are known from the E65 that the way BMW does stuff:

1. ASK unit send out info to amp via fiber optics
2. Tapping before the stock amplifier is close to impossible.
3. You must get the signal for the speakers after the stock amplifier
4. You will need a sound processor to clean up the mess of signals coming out of the L7 amplifier.
5. You are going to need a good amount of Component speakers or seperate woofers and tweeters.

Stick with good brands like Rainbow and you should be good!

Do you not have premium sound? I do in my E65 and I think the L7 sound is fantastic.
MOPAULY, you are in a small minority with your opinion of the premium sound, at least as this board of afficionados is concerned. The premium sound is, in my opinion, one of the grandest ripoffs ever engineered (and I use that word lightly in this instance) by BMW.

The directional separation with satellite and MP3 sound sources is minimal and muddy, the bass, while ample enough if the equalizer is set correctly, is unfocused and vague, the highs are laughable, the surround feature is undetectable, and my wife's Acura MDX with upgraded technology package (upgraded stereo) sounds much better than that in my 7 costing exactly twice as much. I think they have actually de-engineered the sound system here- my 2004 745 had better sound than this piece of crap system. Otherwise, however, the car is fantastic.

Edit: I just re-read your post and see you are referring to the premium sound in the E65, not the F01/02. That explains your opinion.

It sounds like rocket science to me. I really have no idea what your talking about. I appreciate your help but its all chinese to me. I wish somebody could just say give me x dollars leave me your car for 2 days and when I pick it up I have something that actually sounds good

I dont know about past models. I came out of a s class benz that sounded like the Philharmonic compared to this ****. You are absolutely right that the sound system not only doesn't compete with cars that are its piers it cant compete with a new honda accord

do we know what brands of stereo gear bmw put into our 7's "premium stereo"? I thought it was all Harmon Kardon, but maybe it is not? Is L7 a brand or just what BMW calls the system?

I trust Crutchfield and they want to help, but they have not been able to get their hands on a new 7. The dealer is no help to them, either. They are located in Charlotteville, VA - fairly close to Richmond. Is anyone willing to go out there and have them spec out what we need to do? They are interested in helping us.

I will also check out Soundtronics in Wilmington, NC. The installed my Escort 9500ci and it is perfect. They are fairly well known for car audio. anybody know another good firm in Wilmington, NC or Myrtle Beach, SC?

thanks...kt

that would be fantastic. If I was in richmond I would do it in a second. This is the best solution I have heard so far. So they need someone to "lend" them a car lets find someone. If enough people had interest would they find use of a car on their own?

"Doc" and the owner of Crutchfield are looking for a car. I've had them read the blogs and they know there is a big opportunity. Hopefully, one of our friends on the board lives close enough to do this. I have to take a trip up north and if I need to, I wll stop by Crutchfield, myself. Maybe I can get a "local" solution here in Wilmington/Myrtle beach. I will let you know.

the dealers, obviously, resist giving them cars because they are concerned about them getting pulled apart and because they are embarrassed about the feedback we give them to start with.

we will "git er done".

half a day, max. somebody will step up with a car. I do trust these guys (Crutchfield) and will continue to work, locally, for a solution.

my hope is that we actually find a "flaw" in the set-up which creates a recall, saving us all big $$. but, I am a dreamer.......

Come on people, why is everyone making this so hard. Go to a local car audio shop and get a high end speaker and amp swap out and the 7 will sound decent. There is even a speaker manufacturer (Earthquake) that makes a low profile sub specifically for the F01, F02. This is not rocket science and is quite simple. Cost should be approx $1500.00 - $2500.00 depending on how high end you want to go.

If you read what I wrote, there's no replacing the L7 amplifier since it's hooked into the car via Fiber Optics!

You can only get the signal after the amplifier and hook that into a new aftermarket system. It's going to require a processor to get rid of all the L7 processing and then amps and speakers.

No problem getting or tapping to the original signal before the amp. Just get it from ask unit and from L7, just don't use l7 amps.
So I can turn off original amps and connect it to the aftermarket, in this case you will have all 11 channels to play with;)) just get a 11 channel amp or 9 channel plus two way sub amp

so I have upgraded the speakers thru out the car right now and the sound is night and day. When I get a free moment again we will be installing 2 amplifiers to power the speakers and the new subwoofers we are installing. Once all is done I will post up some pics. If anyone is in the NY area and wants to take a listen let me know...
