What a dud! These designs are just ruining the brand.

I LOVE IT! Then again, I've been driving BMW's long enough to remember when we all thought Chris Bangle was ruining the marque. My 15th BMW may well be a G60.

I agree quack. My first impression was very positive. I think it's a strong progression from the F10 and G30 to a more modern and streamlined look while maintaining strong BMW styling queues. Unlike how, IMO, MB has totally destroyed the revered E-Class over the last few generation iterations.

My question now is whether there will still he a 540i 6-cylinder version. On BMWUSA, they seem to mention only the 530i version. It could be because that one may be an initial offering along with the i5.

I think the 540 is coming a few months late. In any case I like the new model and I may be pretty tempted by the i5.
I had great hopes for the G60. Sadly, I have to say I'm extremely disappointed. The front of the car is a train wreck with a kidney grill that is way too large, especially in the vertical plane. Overall way too busy looking and chaotic. Then we go to the rear where it could easily be confused with a Toyota or a Honda. It's not that it's really bad, it's just, blah. And the plastic cladding around the entire bottom of the car's sheet metal is really just a huge aesthetic miss. Plastic ages and discolors very differently than metal and this is likely to become very apparent and off-putting the longer the car is on the road.
The interior seems OK but I was hoping for something a bit more ground breaking. I'm likely to get a new car this Fall/winter and at this point I'm leaning towards the newly redesigned E-class as I think MB did a much better job with their redesign than BMW did with the G60. The E finally looks like a proper upscale sedan rather than the egg on wheels that it's resembled for a couple of generations prior to this.
I've had an extremely positive ownership experience with my current and prior 5 series but I really am having a hard time justifying a purchase of the G60. Possibly I'll be wowed when I get to see and drive it in person but for now I'm far from sold on this redesign.

The current G30 has plastic trim around the lower body, go look. Yes, the rocker panels are body-colored plastic. I have had 2 G30's. Never had an issue with discoloration, chipping, or anything else with that trim.
I don’t think it’s terrible, but I’m done with sedans altogether

G60 seems a little nicer in this youtube comparison.

Ya think? No comparison for me. The minute I saw the new 5 I saw how freshened the design looked, modern, "lighter" and cleaner. I don't agree with the other person's view of out of proportion at all. The MB has its same "dowdy", older and heavier look, and for me, "gross" front design. Interior no comparison either, IMO. The 5 has it all over the E. But hey, take the MB please!

Reminds me of when I was a kid. My dad, mom and me went to order their new '67 Cadillac. My dad drove into the dealer, saw one, and immediately thought he hated the front design with its slanted grill and stacked headlights. We went to the Lincoln dealer right then. Once he saw the whole Lincoln product, he ended up going back and getting the Caddy -- good choice!

Most of what you said are also my impressions of this mess they are calling a 5-series. The outside looks like a Camry from a year or so ago, The dash is a disaster. If I wanted to drive a sideways smartphone, I'd do that instead. BMW, what are you thinking? Where were your focus groups? Several of my friends who drive BMWs had the same reaction, and that is if BMW wishes to keep its longtime customers, then they need to quit putting out rubbish like this. And, doing away with a V-8? Sacrilege. Remember back to the days of the 502/503 when BMW had V-8s as well?

And, since you mentioned Benz, they just need to quit making cars, because they lost their focus on what they were trying to do years back and show no signs of regaining it.

Come back in a couple months after you actually see and sit in one and give us an update. I don't know where you guys are getting this "disaster" scenario. Yes, everyone has their opinion.

Frankly Mark, I was to my nearest BMW dealer last month and looked around at the primer painted (frozen) cars and the cartoon character appliques and all the pig snouts that adorned their showroom and was rather disgusted that a once fine automobile manufacturer had fallen so low.

To then see this release of the "new" 5-series, be it only in print and video, is appalling. Sure, they probably have good engineering, but they are not the works of art that BMW has made in the past. I'm sure even Chris Bangle would be taken aback.

We actually do have opinions, indeed. Mine is that a dashboard that seems to consist of ipads thrown to a sticky surface by someone who managed to throw them all horizontally is ugly from all angles, and is a disaster from a design point of view, especially from a brand that claims to have good design.

I am to this day not sure how (and if) the problem of glare has been solved for a dash that has no visor over it. I would guess that BMW either used some super-duper prisms or whatever, either has its new dashboard suffering from glare big time.

I don't want to open a can of worms here, but here's a very simple proof that a modern dashboard CAN consist entierly of screens AND look good:

I am not comparing brands or anything, just using an example of how to make something modern technologically that doesn't use weird solutions for the sake of weirdness. It could go all screens if technology requires it, without having to look like one big flat 2x6 wood plank from Home Depot.

Needless to say that on top of looking decently good the middle of the dash also DOES tilt towards the driver, which is something that - THE IRONY - BMW was one of the very first brands to bring in its design language (and which was both useful AND good looking).
It is ok to get outdone by others, but outdouing them all for a time then leave THEM all the good design tricks is simply sad. BMW used to have the best dashboards. Only the MK4 Supra and some Euro supercars could match them.

I can't believe that the fumes from Bangle's dashboard experiments with the Z8's dashboard have still not vented out from BMW's design offices. Twenty+ years should have been enough :)

So - sorry, but yes, the new dash is a disaster in that new design language.

I like the G60, and I have a '22 G30. If they bring us a 540-verision of the G61, I'll be ordering one to eliminate two other cars (E92 and an Infiniti SUV).
The grille is still hideous. I simply won't buy another BMW until they fix the grilles...

The interior is "Animal Free"??? Fuck that! I don't need a "woke" car. I like my leather seats. BMW always had nice leather too. Way nicer than my wife's Lexus. For the cost of a "premium" BMW you should get better than plastic/vinyl seats!

I don't get the specific grille comments -- the G60 grille is just not that different from the G30. One less vertical slat on each side, maybe slightly taller. What are you comparing to?
I believe the main issue is not with the grille itself, but the fact that it is protruding way above the headlights this time (it was overlapping maybe an inch on most previous models). And it purposedly shows as part of the hood now, rather than "starting" a bit under it.

Car fascias are anthropomorphic no matter what we think of them. Some cars are "smiling" (some Renault Twingo models and overall some small city cars for example), angry (most sports car and most good-looking BMWs :) ), they usually convey an expression.

The new grille is like a human with the nose starting not between the two eyes, but an inch above them.
The more I look at the G60, the more I think BMW did a pretty good job with it. The MB E Class and G60 comp video posted further up on the thread actually makes the 5 series look more modern while retaining classic BMW sedan looks.
I'm not in the market for a new car so this has zero value.
