I was just curious if anyone has picked these up and if so, what your feelings were with them. I plan on picking them up through the group buy posted here and at E46Fanatics.

I always liked the way the OEM AE's looked on the E39 but the aftermarket ones made to date have poor LED lighting and were a pain to install.

I got a set for 120, off of ebay, spent another 15 bucks to buy hyper LED from a ebay store. And, installed them on my brother-in-law's car. They look awesome. The kit we had required using the dremmel to grind a 1/4 inch or so tunnel on the top of the light, but was no big deal. I could post the PDF, how too. They look great, and I would seriously reccomend getting the hyper LED from the ebay store. The come with pre wired resistors. If you need to know component for the LED. Get any color you like as long as it is rated over 6000 mcd, and youll need a 220 ohm 1/2 watt resistor. And they look awesome.

Ackster: I have been following the same GB, but I can't get any answers about how these get wired into the "ECU". I like them as well, but if it requires a wiring diagram for day time lights operation, then screw it. IF you hear or find out anything, shout!

Will do, I'm getting the CF trim through the same guy (Vinnymac) as the Angel Eyes and he is a good guy. I'm sure I should be able to get some info on this from him.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Ack you buying the optical ones or the LED type?
And they dont need to be hooked to the ECU or nothing like that.
Best place to hook them to is off your cig lighter, you can hook them up to your DTR circuit, or your parking brake/parking lights.

I got instructions for each, I will post later today, but I hope you go with the LED type. The optical type looks VERY weak when compared, and can only be seen at night well, during the day they are kinda dim.

I guess they are actually Fiber Optic. From the pics on the website, they look bright but who knows. The kit comes with two 35 watt halogen bulbs, two illuminator boxes and fiber optic cable. I'm sure they can be retrofitted to use LED's if necessary.

I be looking forward to checking out these instructions.

Cool.

What I should have mentioned, or the way that I should have explained this, was to say that I would like to be able to wire these so that they work only with the daytime running lights in 'on' postition. That is the question.

In the For Sale forum, he only mentions that "you can wire them anyway you like", which does not answer my question!

these are the fiber ones. Let me introduce you to a guy though who also sells them, i dont know if you will get a better deal. check here
http://members.roadfly.com/mitra99/fiberoptic.htm he was very cool, and we got ours through him, only the LED ones.

His versions do not require you to trim the headlight.

good luck
The first link looks exactly the same - minus the drilling - as the kit that Vinnymac is selling.

The second link is, from what I have read at E46fanatics.com, the way not to do it. Using the OE E39 rings etc. is supposedly a poor fit.

The last link is the same kit that Vinnymac is selling - made by Herb.

the version I had was made by Jim Powell, there is drilling required, at the back of the assembly. there are new kits out there, most noticably Herb's kit, haven't seen it in person so I cant' say which is better. but I believe on herb's kit you cut a hole on the rubber piece that covers the bulbs to run the fiber optics out, so there is some cutting involved. With Herb's kit, you glue the rings and with Jim's kit, you have clips, but there were problems with the clips staying together......

I had the angel eyes on my halogen headlights, but since then I upgraded to xenons, and have a new set waiting to be installed but I've been lazy too.

Also a plug, I have the OEM halogen headlight assembly with the angel eyes pre-installed and I am looking to sell them if anyone's interested....just email me [email protected], this is perfect for someone that doesn't want to mess with their own headlights.

Fiber Optic install?

Just installed my Fiber Optic set (Herbs kit from the Group buy) this afternoon and it's kind'a dim compared to the pictures I've seen posted on the net. I ended up tapping in to the foglight for power.

With Xenon Headlights on:

With Just Day Time Running lights:

What do you guys think?

I would tap into the cig lighter so you can have them on solo if you want. Also, that is why i recommend the LED type, you can get hyper ones that are very very bright. Those pics look really good though, good install.

They look really nice! Since there has been a lot of buzz over at E46fanatics about installing Herb's kit with Bi-Xenons, could you tell us what you did to install the AE's over the Bi-Xenons?

Also, did the kit come with the different color lights?

Re: Re: Fiber Optic install?

Yeah, I was thinking about the cig lighter for power. I've never really done any mod to my car (except for the alarm and clear corner lights) so I'm not that familiar yet with the electric wiring, hopefully the E46 Bently manual I just ordered will help a lot.
