On the 05...WhiteWings,
....NoWay!
Just discovered a leaking compressor
Well to work I GO! Damn!
You think..."stop leak" can do the trick?

Fix it! AC compressor is just about the easiest failure point to fix. Thank your lucky stars it isn't the evaporator. Stop leak risks ruining other parts of the ac system.

Used compressor ftom a wreck , recharge, $200 all in.

Damn...Bullseye!
You know I'm inclined to that sort of thing.
Ah Ha!
Looks like I did pull a compressor on one of my first runs to the boneyard...was on the shelf.
Now if it doesn't leak
Make sure you add the appropriate amount of PAG oil to it. God knows you don't wanna be stuck in a southern summer without AC again...

New AC compressor, whether Denso or another mfg used by BMW, is NOT expensive

I'd recommend using a new compressor.

I wouldn't disagree with you...most likely I'll pick/purchase one even if this one -denso- works out.
Thanks

Nissens about $250 I think, from FCP of course.

I barely survive Northern latitudes without AC, down South, I would just melt.

PM me if Bentley pages are useful on this job.

Agreed. And if you happen to have leaking vapor barriers (ugh) or something else permitting moisture into the car, A/C is essential to keep the fog off the windows. Of course the leak must be fixed but sometimes the source is not immediately clear.

A quality set of manifold gauges and a vacuum pump is also recommended. I figure @BimmurBrothor has no r134 left in the system so I doubt it needs evacuation, but he still needs to draw a vacuum on it.

BimmerBrothor you should also replace the filter drier. It's super easy to get to and cheap and will ensure that moisture in the system is completely absorbed.

All good points...if only you knew how long

Evaporator Core

I've been wrestling with the 05 A/C... it's what spawned the idea of bringing RR on board.
Anyways, WhiteWings is all charged up! I feel good about this attempt, let's see how long it last...if I don't report back once two weeks pass...its a go ahead.

If you need a DIY, I wrote a compressor DIY in E39 5-series forum...
Great... good to know cn90...like to check it out anyways, add to my mental library.

On the drive home from work the temp was 85°...the AC tried but couldn't counter that heat...by time i got home i could tell the AC was slightly warmer on passenger side. Still cold somewhat.
Clear sign of low refrigerant.
I think they at the shop partially filled the system...i had a half can of 134a on the shelf...i used it, felt a considerable difference. I got to check to see how much is in the system.
Can't over fill or under fill, ya know...

How do you check how much there is in the system without evacuating it?

With a checkbook of course! ;)

No judgement against @BimmurBrothor , most of my A/C recharge attempts have been on shitboxes (not calling his cars such, but I mean cars which a leaking compressor is the least of its problems) that were nearly worth less than the tires I put on them; just checking low side pressures and calling it good enough...and more often than not, it "worked". But with a leaking system there's no way to see how much is in the system unless you evacuate it. Of course you can check low and high side pressures to get it functioning decently but on a system leaking that fast there's probably not much utility to it.

I can be a blood hound about these problems... and when I achieve, I ware it as a badge of honor.
Some guys have problems with changing oil.
Some with breaks. Others with wipers...
Me, I guess it's the AC but that's on the verge of ending
I might just use the manifold from AZ...next time, to be accurate.
Should get up in the 80's for temps today...that's a great test temp for the 05s AC performance . keep you posted!

On the way home back from work ...91°. After a 45 min drive WhiteWings AC was feebly fending off the 90° heat. Of course I was not satisfied. Once home immediately I added a little less than a can of freon...I liked the results. Its like 35° blowing from the vents now. By time I get off today temps should also be in the 90s.
Then I'll see how whitewings quickly fights off the heat.
It takes the 04 GrayGhost less than ten minutes and iam comfortably crusin
Returned from a 4hour round trip temps reached 85°. At less than 8min the cockpit was at comfortable temp.
The 05 (white wings) fended off the highway heat like a champ!
On and off i smelled faint/hints of freon. I feel this gremlin is out for the count...
We'll stay in the monitoring mode position for the next couple of weeks.
