I got my first BMW in 1982, it was a '82 320i. I was living in Orlando then and I could drive for almost a week before I'd see another BMW. Back then when 2 BMWs passed the drivers would flash their lights ay one another.
Anyone out there old enough to remember those days?

yep...i had a 79 320i, and remember the customary light-flashing. my friend had a pristine '76 2002 and it was rare to see any other bmw's on the road.

now i see 5 e46's parked within 100 yds of me when i get to work...no exaggeration.
My first bmw was a 1972 2002 4-speed, and I remember those days, and that car well.

Not only did you flash another one, but sometimes you would pull over just to "chat"

Much different world now...:thumbdwn:
I wish everyone would speak and smile..I would..but don't because other people I see seem weird or something :( or they are like 90 and can't even see the road.. :(
I know what you are talking about, but have only seen it done a few times...
Maybe we should start this old tradition up again! At least if someone flashes back we'll know that they either are old time beemer owners or they read this list.

"bimmer"...but who cares?
;)
It's a sad commentary that flashing someone could potentially get one shot at today. But, alas, I cannot count the times that a fellow BMW driver has come up to me in parking lots to shoot the breeze and to trade looks at our cars. What we need is a kinder and gentler nation and it can start with us, both in parking lots and on the road. :thumb:

I've had similar experiences as most of you, with many of the different cars I've driven. A nice/unique car will attract people that just want to come over and chat about it. I've come to the conclusion that "car People" are generally good, fun, interesting people no matter what their age.
Since I'm a female, most people are surprised at my interest and knowledge of cars. I'm lucky to have an understanding husband, but he often reminds me that it's a thin line between a hobby and an obsession.

Alex-
You asked for a pic of my MGB, so here is a website I have been putting together that show some of our cars.
We have family around the country that likes to see what we've been driving.
I hope this works

Alex,
Try again, please. I think it's OK now but maybe it's only letting me in.
Thanks
At the least we should have a wave, like the Corvette folks do.
72 2002, great car. Flashed all the time. Don't do it anymore.
I flash my lights at oncoming 3-series where I live, not many of them around. Once I get closer to the city, then I see more of them.

There are two other bimmers I run into now and again during rush hour along the 5 between Sorrento Valley and LJ Village Drive that are always waving and smiling. A white coupe (like me) and a black coupe. They look like friendly people to me.

But I agree that for the most part, most other bimmer drivers don't even acknowledge your existence....

I could never get away with flashing BMWs in Germany. They are everywhere!
