If so, were you happy with it? I know this is kind of a stale topic but I get my retrofit May 14th. Thanks!

You're getting the retrofit on an xi?
Last I checked they claimed that was impossible. I DEFINITELY want to hear about the results of this.

Not impossible...It's not necessary. The definative rumors were:

a) It's using the same racks as the Pre-June 2000 E46es or

b) The heavier front suspension on the Xi would make the boosted steering feel just like the pre-june 2000 E46es. In fact some speculated BMW went with the light steering racks just so they don't have to make multiple steering racks for all the models.

This is a PERFECT illustration of the lemming mentality that goes on, on the on-line community. The Xi's had good steering to start with.
First off, let me admit that I have not driven a '99 or y2k E46. However, the fact remains that my 325xi has SUBSTANTIALLY inferior steering to my old E36. :dunno: I would LOVE to have some additional weight, it would make the driving experience a LOT more pleasant.

The difference is that the xis do not have dangerously light steering like the regular 3 series dis.

Got it for a Sept'00 Production 330Ci. Love the retrofit... it is now the car I was after.

Yup, I got it on a 7/00 production 2001 330Ci, love it, love it, love it!

it's how a BMW to be like. feels a lot safer when I got over 110mph. the retrofit along with the M3 steering wheel makes the car feel a lot more confident.

If she just changed from an Xi to a 330Ci a few months ago then she DEFINATELY does not qualify for a retrofit. All 330Ci's produced after April of 2001 does not qualify.

Should have clarified ............ it was a preowned unit.
yeah 325 steelgray xi

is a cool chick. bought my rear clears off her. almost nothing better than a woman who is into cars. she's the one with the bmw turtle tattoo.

325SGXI - how's the weather in upstate NY? i'd imagine you havent had the chance to clean the car too much.
a few of us- myself, PG, Rchoudry and others have been a bit disappointed w/ the retrofit-- all of our cars tramline badly and have a looser on center feeling (although a tighter feeling in turns), that makes highway even worse than it was before. My problems are compounded by the fact that I got another alignment to try and fix this and now the steering wheel is crooked, so i'm taking it to another dealer tomorrow to try and get it straighteneed. Maybe we just all got bad racks and bad alignments-- others seems to be happy. The racks used in the retrofit are refurbished units-- you actually can't buy a new rack from BMW even if you wanted to. Refurbished units are built by hand from what I gather and there might be some greater variations in the tolerances than in original new racks.

Rchoudry has gotten so sick of his bad retrofit steering that he's trading his car in for a 2002 model. PG somehow got a dealer to order him another rack-- although I haven't found a dealer that will agree to doing that for me and neither did Rchoudry. If you search this board and bimmer.org you'll find other people who've had the retrofit and experienced this. Haven't seen a definitive fix-- usually it ends w/ the person getting so frustrated they either sell or trade the car. I'm praying that this alignmetn solves my problems but realistically in know that it probably won't. I'm considering trying to strike a deal w/ a dealer who has a CPO 99 or 00 e46 to swap racks-- so that I can try before I buy and hopeuflly get the right steering feel in my car. Of course, we all forget now that in 99 and 00 these type of boards were full of owners complaining of twitchy or floaty steering. Who knows. :dunno: Unless you really can't stand your current steering-- if it tracks straight and doens't tramline badly stick w/ what you have.

Sorry...

...Yes, I have neglected to change my user name. I kind of like my "old" 325xi name!

I traded in my '01 325xi for a '01 330ci with June 2000 production date. BMW of NA wasn't going to allow me to get the retrofit because I am the second owner but somehow I got the call. Works for me!

Eugene - you're too funny! Hope the clears are treating you well! I can't wait to get them for my car but I lost my job 2 months ago and have been putting all my spending on hold. (Which stinks because I found a motorcycle I want that I actually fit on!)
