Just replaced my driver's door handle with what I thought was just the replacement for the "left" side, as the parts catalog didn't seem to list a separate "left front" and "left rear" item. However, a follow-up from the seller (getbmwparts.com) pointed out that there is in fact a different part# for front vs rear, and that the one I bought and installed was actually the rear model.
It fit physically and functions as it should, so does anyone know if there really is a difference in form/fit/function? B/c I've now ordered the "front" version but might just install it in the rear if they are in fact identical.

why am I thinking only the driver door has a key cylinder?

The handle that you pull on is a separate from the key cylinder portion. In the rear, the version of that portion looks like just a cover w/o the actual key slot. The moving handle looks identical front and rear. And like I said the one meant for the rear fit perfectly in the front and seems to function as it should, i.e. it unlocks when touched. But maybe there's more to it...
