First time poster here and you guys have a great forum. So I'm trying to decide between an Audi A4 and a BMW 3 Series right now and am wondering what your thoughts are about the pros and cons of each car. I know this is a BMW forum so there will be some natural bias, but that's cool. I have plenty of Audi/VW enthusiasts yapping in my ears about the A4 since I currently drive a VW. Is there anything about the Audi that you wish you had on your bimmer? So far what I've gathered is:

1. Driving dynamics and handling - BMW
2. Refinement and looks - Audi
3. Price - Audi
4. Quattro > xdrive, so I hear (but mostly from VAG folks).

What's been your experience with BMW dealer service?

Thanks

I currently drive an A4 3.2. I purchased the car after getting fed up with my unpredictable 330xi (long story, but it often would not start in the morning without a jump and after taking it in a dozen times or so, I decided to unload it).

I have missed driving the BMW every day since I got the Audi. The Audi may have a nicer interior and a nicer nav screen (IMO), but it is not fun to drive at all.

As you can see, I'm going back to BMW. I'm hoping that I get hooked up with a more dependable one this time around :)

You should break out refinement and looks, looks are totally subjective, but I don't even think its a close call on refinement, BMW kills Audi.

I test drove both and came away thinking you get what you pay for, sure Audi is cheaper. but for good reason.

On dry pavement Quattro behaves more like a FWD, while x-Drive like a RWD.

Claresecl, thanks. Your comment about missing the bimmer every day speaks volumes.

BMW101, which VW are you talking about? If you equip a Passat to the point where its comparable to an A4, it actually can cost more. The only VW I would consider at this point is the Jetta GLI, but I don't like the quasi-ricer look. I bet every honda boy with a gigantic spoiler would want to race me if I drove a GLI and I'm getting too old for that.

i test drove A4 3.2 as well. it's good but it's just not as unique and classy as a bmw just to be honest. the experience is just different.

car test drove b4 purchase of 328xi:
Audi A4 3.2
Benz C280
Infiniti G35x

I'm on my 4th BMW, but defected to Audi for a while (A3 3.2). Audi interiors are the best in the business. Audi's do not have the 50/50 weight distribution of BMW and it is a noticeable difference. Audi's are not that much cheaper in the end, but my buying experience at Audi was MUCH better than any BMW stealership. My personal preference for driving dynamics is definitely BMW, but the Audi's are nice. Audi's also do not include free service (oil changes, brake pads, etc.).

buying experience audi negative for me. but i just went to one dealership. it's funny. i requested to test drive A4 3.2 but the sales said A4 2.0 is enough for me. i asked him what do you mean it's enough. he gave me a blank face then started asking my status (immigrant or citizen and student or working full time) in the country as if i don't have enough money to get the 3.2. i was not very happy and told him not to worry about the money. anyway after test driving the sales just left me in the parking lot and quickly walked back to the dealership. i am young but please i am still a customer. i can only call this unprofessional.

:dunno:Mine does:dunno:
They changed that for most of the 07 models, you could buy a maint package but it wasn't as comprehensive as the BMW or the older Audi ones.

I have both, a new 2007 328xi wagon and 2006 3.2 Avant, you may not be looking at wagons but here is my 2 cents. The BMW drives circles around the Audi, the BMW we chose has a 6sp manual, our Audi has tiptronic, I love the torque in the Audi V6. Audi as most of us know keeps changing there equipment pkgs. We couldn't get the same equipment so we went with the BMW. The tester we drove was an A4 6sp Manual sedan, we felt it was noisy (wind, tires not a solid ride )overall we felt th BMW was the best choice at this time. We were able to test back to back at the same dealer.

NOTHING compares to BMW's inline 6. An inline 6 is the most balanced engineering design.....with the exception of a V12. Several years ago Popular Mechanics described the acceleration of the BMW V12 as "ripping silk".

a) Find me an all wheel drive VW sedan that has a sports suspension that costs less than an A4 and I'll look at it.

b) Yes, I know I will get different opinions from bimmer owners vs. audi owners as I noted in my first post. I am looking for opinions from two different camps, not commissioning a scientific study.

which model of A4 are you really looking at? 2.0 or 3.2?

imo there's nothing much audi owners can complain about the E90 except for styling which is really a personal taste.

I prefer to 2.0 with a manual tranny. Just a lot more fun to drive than the 3.2 and most V6's I've driven. My mom is leasing an 07 X3 right now, and the 2.0T A4 I test drove pulls harder than her car from 40-70. From 0-60, the X3 is quicker, but I care more about passing power than 0-60.

As for looks, I agree its personal taste. I just don't like the way bimmers look.....designers seem to try too hard to make the car look aggressive. No subtlety, but that's just me. On the other hand, the Audi grill is not exactly a work of art.

if you don't like the way bimmers look there's no point of getting it. the engine and all those mechanism are important. but hey you are gonna spend over 30k get something that you like. i do prefer the look of e90 to A4.

the acceleration improves a lot once you engage sport mode in 328xi. 80km/h to 130km/h in no time espeically when you needa merge on highway.

My cousin just got an 07 a4 2.0t 6sp sline titanium package about a month ago. I knew audi was nice but after driving and sitting I understand how nice it really is. In my honest opinion its what you want. Are you mod friendly? If so you get a downpipe and an apr flash and you are feeling good with a nice clutch/stick. Then suspension if you want to just graze it throw an rs4 rear sway which is 22mm and you can be done or you can get coilovers/etc. If you want the "hey i have a bmw" feel get the bimmer. In my honest opinion if i was shopping an a4 opted that way and a 328 loaded for exclusivity I would get the audi. I also like the audi in this case just a little bit more. Plus it has a turbo(ko3) the 328 def dont have that lol. Good luck with your decision.

I test drove the A4 recently. The Audi has the edge in looks, but definitely not refinement. The Quattro system may have been superior to the AWD system in the E46 Xi but I don't believe that is true of the xdrive which is as good as any system I am aware of.

Price is a trickier issue. The Audi may seem cheaper but its really more expensive. First of all, their lower end model has a 4 banger turbo charged engine so you really have to compare the 328xi to the V6 version. Secondly, the Audi does not come with free maintainance any more, the costs of servicing an Audi or BMW in many parts of the country can really add up fast. The real kicker though is the deprecation and lease residuals. BMW's 3yr residuals are around 60%, Audi's are closer to 50%.
