today i am going to attempt to add aux-in (for ipod/mp3 player/etc) to my brother's stock head unit in his e36 '97 318i. I completed a similar mod on my saab ng900 and will try to document this as well as possible seeing as this isn't even deemed "possible" on many threads in the e36 section. My plan is to solder a connection to the tape deck and leave a blank cassette in the deck at all times.

mod works, pics should explain everything
open radio
take out cassette deck
remove metal shielding
on that circuit board, from right to left is
GROUND LEFT RIGHT
for audio signals
solder a wire to each of those and a connector to the other end which i ran through under to the space under the onboard computer

materials
soldering iron (any crappy one will do, preferably lower wattage, but just be quick if its more than about 30 watts)
solder
cable with at least 3 wires in it ( i used a cat-5 on my saab and a usb cable on my brothers BMW)
1/8" connector

pics should explain everything pretty well
