I don't have any particular wish to run any of the tires that are available in 215/40 17. Ah well. No 205/40 17 tire can handle my car's weight, either.

So... Potenza RE950s at 215/45 17 it is. I don't want to go any wider, lest I have to deal with horrible tramlining.

Tramling with > 215s? I highly doubt that 225/45/17's would cause much at all, but that's just speculation.

Hope you like the RE950's, they're GREAT tires!
