I ran into a post somewhere on the forums regarding this useful PDF from BAVAUTO:

https://www.bavauto.com/newsletter/2008_n108_newsletter.pdf

It lists the maintenance schedule for most if not all BMW/Minis.

I'll sum up the E39 schedule:

Engine Oil/Filter: 7k synthetic / 3k dino juice (I usually change every 5k even w/ synthetic)

MTF: 50k/2yr whichever comes first

ATF: 50k/2yr whichever comes first

DIFF FLUID: 50k/2yr whichever comes first

P/S Fluid: 50k/2yr whichever comes first

Flush Brake Fluid: 1yr

Flush Coolant: 3yr

Belts: 60k/4yr whichever comes first

Coolant Hoses: 60k/4yr whichever comes first

Cabin Microfilter: 1yr

Engine Air Filter: 15k/1yr whichever comes first

Fuel Filter: 1-2yr depending on the amount of ethanol in your fuel

Spark Plugs: 60k

Spark Plug Wires/Boots: 60k/4yr whichever comes first

O2 Sensors: 100k

Water Pump: 60-80k (indicates typical mileage of failures)

Inspect Brakes, Front & Rear Axle Boots, Driveshaft Flex Disc & Engine/Tranny Mounts, and Steering, Suspension Linkages & Joints: 30k/1yr whichever comes first

Charcoal Canister: 100k

Here's some stuff that I don't typically do:

P/S Fluid: 50k/2yr whichever comes first

Flush Brake Fluid: 1yr

Flush Coolant: 3yr (gets flushed whenever radiator is changed)

Belts: 60k/4yr whichever comes first (my mechanic will usually do a visual inspection of cracks on the belts and replace when necessary)

Coolant Hoses: 60k/4yr whichever comes first (again mechanic inspects this, and usually is replaced when the rad or h2o pump is replaced)

Cabin Microfilter: 1yr (I think this is done every tune-up)

Engine Air Filter: 15k/1yr whichever comes first (again, done during the tune-up)

Fuel Filter: 1-2yr depending on the amount of ethanol in your fuel (again, done during the tune-up)

Spark Plugs: 60k (tune-up)

Spark Plug Wires/Boots: 60k/4yr whichever comes first (never)

O2 Sensors: 100k (only when SES light is on)

Water Pump: 60-80k (indicates typical mileage of failures) - (my 98 540 is still running the original pump at 100k, i think...)

Inspect Brakes, Front & Rear Axle Boots, Driveshaft Flex Disc & Engine/Tranny Mounts, and Steering, Suspension Linkages & Joints: 30k/1yr whichever comes first (my mechanic always checks these things out every 5k when I get an oil change)

Charcoal Canister: 100k (never?)

Any opinions? What do you guys typically follow?

I've seen it before on my 92 525i. It was right by the driver's side headlight. I think it has something to do w/ fuel?

They usually slip it in with their mags and newsletters. Very good suggestive selling tool.

:typing: Let's see, got my cf emblems, my new air gauge, my $25.00 window wipes, my cage for my hairy-ass golden retriever that I always take in the car with me... only a few more bucks and I get free shipping. Hmmmm..... got it! I don't remember ever changing my charcoal canister. I'm getting me one of them!
