Today's (Sunday, 6 Aug 06) SF Chronicle had a long article in the travel section on Berchtesgaden and Obersalzburg. It also covers some other nearby Bavarian sights.

There is also a column on the relationship between German history and tourism. (See if you can spot the geographic error.) URL: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/08/06/TRGV3K9JSD1.DTL
FWIW, I would strongly commend a detour through this area, including Konigsee, if you are headed to Salzburg and/or Vienna.

Given my "handle", I heartily concur. Berchtesgaden is our favorite place and provides an excellent point from which you can explore Salzburg, the Salzkammergut region (check out Hallstadt), the K***246;nigsee and, of course, the Eagles Nest. We just got back from our ED trip and took the X-3 up the Gro***223;glockner Hochalpenstra***223;e -- just fantastic and worth a trip on its own.
