As fuel quality continually changes (not for the better), it doesn’t hurt to research what the best the best fuel injector cleaner for BMW options are.

Cheap gas, ethanol, long-term sitting, and just plain vehicle age. They're all things that can cause deposits in your fuel system, especially your injectors, that mean your BMW isn't running as well as you remember anymore. There are solutions, of course, to that hesitation you might feel at low throttle openings, to the slightly lumpier than normal idle of your usually silky inline-six, to the stench of fuel every time you've finished a drive and park your vehicle.

The best place to start is with a quality fuel injector cleaner. These fuel system cleaners and additives are full of solvents and other chemicals that work to dissolve carbon deposits and buildups in the system caused by old and low-quality gasoline. They can also work to remove and prevent the corrosion caused by adding modern ethanol-containing gasoline to your older BMW that wasn't designed for it. On direct-injection BMWs, like the latest models, a fuel injector cleaner can make sure that the injector is able to fire with the pinpoint accuracy it was designed for, while on older port injection vehicles the additives can also clean carbon buildups from your intake manifolds and the backs of your intake valves.

While not all fuel system cleaners are the best fuel cleaners for your BMW, here's a look at some of the best fuel injector cleaners from the best in the business.

1. Editors Choice - Berryman Products B-12 Chemtool
1030462

Berryman Chemtool contains the company's proprietary High Energy Solvent Technology. This means strong solvents rather than weak carriers like mineral spirits or kerosene, the company says, which makes the treatment more effective at cleaning your fuel system. The company claims lower operating costs, longer injector life, and higher compression with use of the B-12 cleaner, which cleans your entire fuel system from tank to injectors and is also meant to remove fuel residue from valves, rings, and pistons. Chemtool is also VOC compliant in all 50 states, meaning it's not contributing to pollution in the air around you when you pour it into your BMW's fuel tank. Berryman's most interesting demonstration of how HEST technology works is pouring it and some competitors into Styrofoam cups. Only Berryman eats through the cup, and it's the only one that remains flammable when poured into a container after the test. It also works on carburetors if your BMW is a real classic.

Sea Foam IC5 Fuel Injector Cleaner
1030458

Sea Foam is a brand that's been around automotive chemicals since 1942, and it's famous for its oil treatment that leaves your car in a cloud of smoke (briefly) and then free of carbon deposits. They also have a fuel injector cleaner that's designed to help improve emissions, reduce lost power, and improve fuel economy. IC5 is also designed to add lubricity to your upper cylinder walls, which can help reduce wear and increase engine smoothness. A single bottle can treat up to 25 gallons of gasoline, and it comes with an extra-long-neck bottle that makes it easier to use on modern capless fuel tanks. For optimal cleaning, add a full bottle to a low tank of fuel, making the product even more concentrated in your tank. The manufacturer recommends using the proper amount of IC5 with each tank to ensure optimal performance.

STP Fuel Injector Cleaner, Super Concentrated
1030459

STP Super Concentrated Fuel Injector Cleaner is made with jet fuel, which the manufacturer says is a great way to carry the active ingredients into your fuel system and reach your injectors. One bottle is meant to treat up to 21 gallons of fuel, and STP recommends adding one to your gas at each oil change. Safe to use on all gasoline engines, including your direct-injected and turbocharged BMW, the product should work quickly to remove carbon, gum, varnish, and other deposits from the insides of your fuel injectors. STP advertises this as a "clean up" product, meaning it's intended to actually remove the deposits unlike more frequently used "keep clean" products that are meant to stop deposits from forming in advance. It too has an easy-pour bottle to make sure the product ends up in your tank and not on your driveway.

Royal Purple Max Atomizer
1030460

Royal Purple is already well known for its high-performance motor oil and the signature purple hue of that lubricant. Made to use on all gasoline fuel systems, this injector cleaner contains polyether amines, detergents designed to quickly clean clogged injectors to restore fuel flow, spray, and the proper spray pattern. Even in the hostile environment of a direct-injection fuel system. This means the potential for improved fuel economy, restored power and emissions performance, and easier starts. It's also the only one on this list that is designed to stabilize ethanol in fuel, stopping the potentially harmful effects of that additive. It's also compliant with EPA and CARB regulations and will not harm emissions control systems. Many reviews report improved performance after using the Max Atomizer injector cleaner, including that restored fuel economy and performance. You will need a funnel, though, as this one isn't filler-neck friendly.

AUTOOL CT150 Ultrasonic Fuel Injector Tester Cleaner
1030465

Sometimes your fuel injectors are clogged beyond the ability of a fuel system treatment to handle. That usually means you'll need to buy a new set or send your injectors off for an expensive rebuild, but why not try it yourself? For less than the cost of a new set of injectors, you can get your own ultrasonic fuel injector tester and cleaner. Able to handle four injectors at one time, it starts with an ultrasonic cleaning bath that uses pulsed sound waves to dislodge any particles that have built up inside the injector. Once that stage is done, you can use the system to test the injectors for proper resistance, shorts, current draw, and you can even test the spray pattern and flow to make sure it's up to spec. By cleaning your injectors then testing them, you can easily tell if one, all, or even none of them are the problem without throwing expensive parts at your engine. For the more experienced DIY mechanic or shop, a rig like this can save time and money.

How do I know if I need Fuel Injector Cleaner?
The companies that make them will tell you always need injector cleaner as a preventative measure, but if you don't want to follow those directions, here's where we'd recommend a bottle. If your BMW just doesn't feel the way it used to, either sluggish, rough-idling, or using more fuel, but it's not setting a check engine light? Fuel injector cleaner is a great place to start. Especially if your spark plug maintenance is up to date. If a tank or two of cleaner doesn't fix you up, then it's time for some more in-depth diagnostics, but trying the easy fixes first certainly won't hurt.

How to Use Fuel Injector Cleaner?
Follow the directions on the bottle, but they'll usually be the same. Shake the bottle thoroughly to make sure that all the cleaners are dispersed into the liquid and nothing has settled, then pour it into your gas tank. Usually into a low tank because that helps concentrate the cleaner to let it work. Run that tank as low as you dare, then refill with high-quality gasoline. For highly gummed-up engines, another round should take care of all but the most stuck injectors or those that have a mechanical failure.
