No offense to Cutter and Jon, but I agree. B'fest (the event, not the board), from what I can tell, has turned into a modded car show (a la E46 Fanatics). But O'fest is a gathering of CCA nutjobs who like to autox and track their cars, appreciate older BMWs, and, to generalize, have an attitude closer to that of the guys on THIS board.

Well, O'fest does have track events, true. Bimmerfest was way more than modded cars though they may have received most of the photo ops. There were far more stock or mild mods (wheels) than the heavy mods. I found the crowd at Bimmerfest to be exactly like this board....as a matter of fact most of the attendees at Bimmerfest are on this board, what a coincidence!

All I meant to point out was Bimmerfest had 3 times the regestered people (1000 at cutoff)

I would have loved to go to both, but O'Fest has a lot more appeal due to its activities, it is longer, and is in Colorado.

It takes a much more determined person to make it to Colorado than a bunch of guys from LA driving up to SB for the day (besides you :p)

There's a half dozen from our club going to O'fest from here. I was asked to go but wanna keep the miles off the car.

I'm afraid O'fest will be 2002 hell. I love the cars BUT I'm getting really tired of every event slammed with 2002s and the owners are getting really pushy "Were the 2002 guys, don't we get special treatment? It's OUR year!"

That would have been a great drive!

I would have taken a northern route through N Idao, Montana, then dive down through Wyoming to Colorado.

Gorgeous! :thumb:

RE:

Nate, TD, et al, BimmerFest was an event specifically designed (as a 1 day event) and tailored to the demographic of the type of people who participate in message board discussion groups such as this one. A different type of deal than OctoberFest. If we wanted to do OctoberFest, it would be much easier to just simply go to Octoberfest, no??

Since we're now on the subject of the profile of those who make up this board let's apply the Scientific Method here, and collect some data.

Starting with you TD, why doesn't everyone post their age, and what they feel is the most salient aspect as to why they consider themself a "true BMW Enthusiast" (rather than some spoiled stupid-punk kid who couldn't tell the difference between an ECU and his ASS)?

I will perform an Analysis Of Variance on the results myself, and let you know what I find...

I don't think either of us were knocking bimmerfest. I would have loved to go and shurly would have had a good time. If i were to pick one, Oktoberfest would be it. Oktoberfest just seems more fun with all the driving events and classic BMWs :yikes:

Well, I can see your point, Nate. However, whenever someone starts out a statement, "No offense, but...", they are knowingly, and purposefully making a disparaging remark. You don't have to have an I.Q. of anything higher than an 80 (yes, 2 full standard deviations below the mean) to know that Oktoberfest is a BMWCCA sanctioned event, advertised for months in advance to every card-carrying BMWCCA member in the Roundel, that has an operating budget of probably several hundred thousand dollars, that also involves no less than an army of planners. To then go on and pass judgement on an event which one did not personally attend, and then compare it to something that it is obviously not happens to be offending to me - as the person responsible for the event itself, and, in part, for the very message board on which the comment is being posted.

...Just my $02...

I just don't understand why Tom would bash the event right here on the eponymous message board...

Well, *I* wasn't trying to knock bimmerfest. I can't speak for Tom. I was never under the impression of a modded car show, and those pics that I saw of modded cars were usually things like DINAN S/C cars and ACS cars, very nice, like the RD Tornado :yikes: I was just kidding, and saying at the same time that more attendies doesn't mean that the event is necessarily better or more fun. I would have loved to go to bimmerfest, and really appreciate the messageboard.

Look at the calendar of events at Oktoberfest; A Club Race, DE, Safety School, auto-x, etc http://bmwofest2002.com/schedule.htm

Cutter and team did a great job as a one day program, not everyone can go to a weeklong BMW party (I can't), but O'fest sounds like more fun due to how long it is and the events planned. I hope I didn't sound like I was knocking bimmerfest, I wasn't, O'fest just has a lot more stuff to do :dunno: It probably has a lot fewer people attending because it is so far a way and so long. Maybe if bimmerfest organizes a club race and DE, it could be as appealing :D It already has the right people....You guys should organize an auto-x for the Sunday after bimmerfest next year :D

Hey Doug- You bemoan the one that started it all...???

Well, Doug......
If it wasn't for the car in 'my' garage, you and your E46 friends wouldn't have anything to talk about..... :thumb: ]
Hint- Just deal with it. There's only going to be one 2002 EVER, so after next Jan 1st... It'll all be over but the memories. It all goes around. Just think of the year 6000. All those Pontiac owners will be in our shoes then.

I like Bimmerfest the way it is . . .

I think Bfest is fine the way it is. A very nice event for the enthusiasts that do not belong to BMW CCA or maybe for the more casual enthusiast. Let's not forget that Bimmerfest is a free event for attendees. I think it's great that Cutter Motors is willing to basically shut down their dealership for a day to put on such an event. I think it serves its intent to bring the on-line community together once a year very well. I don't think it should be compared to or turned into another Ofest. For Haus to say Bfest beats Ofest is probably not a fair statement (sorry Haus), but for some segments of the BMW community, it is a more appropriate event.

On a side note, at an LA BMW CCA board meeting, a DTM guy and myself (a Bfest guy) were telling the board they should find ways to embrace the BMW on line communities. I will probably post some polls asking for opinions, suggestion, etc. looking for ideas to make that happen.

I just caught all of these responses. I was not here when these were posted or I would have responded sooner.

I, in no way, intended to disparage you Jon or the folks at Cutter who have all consistently demonstrated a commitment to the community far beyond what any reasonable person would expect.

And, no, I was not there. I based my oversimplified comments on what I've seen and heard. And that may have been a gross mistake.

My comments were based on a preference for attending a track event over a modded car show. I know that's an oversimplification, but I jumped on Nate's original comment (scroll up) and ran with it.

I have been on these boards for a long time and recall seeing pics and hearing about the previous Bimmerfests. All of them have looked like events I'd love to attend prior to this year's.

From what I can tell, the mod crowd became very prevalent at this year's event making it more like a modded car show. If that assessment is incorrect, than I apologize for jumping to conclusions on that as well.

The only dig (and it was meant not in a very serious way and is consistent with my online persona) would have been directed at the mod crowd. I certainly am envious of the west coasters who could attend the event and, again, did not intend to disparage Jon or anyone at Cutter. You know I am vocal in support of Cutter and Jon whenever some troll comes along flaming you guys. And I truly am sorry that you got the impression you did. I regret that and sincerely apologize for my comments.

My bad TD.....

I think that I was, um, p.m.s'ing...

;)

It's funny, but I thought about it a lot over the weekend, and you are right, the population density / penetration of modded cars has indeed grown over the years. Back in 2000, E46 was just in it's 2nd year (1st year in coupe form); there was no such thing as an E46 M3 yet. The closest thing was maybe Evan Beal's 328Ci.

A few years later, and look what happens...

Anyway, in retrospect, I have to agree with you Tom. I'd really love to include an auto-x as part of BimmerFest. I've thought about it many times. In fact, I personally have wanted to move the event from the dealership to the Earl Warren Showgrounds, which is only a couple of blocks away. This would eliminate the concerns regarding overcrowding, and enable us to have a auto-x (the showgrounds have a huge asphalt parking lot where autocrosses have been held in the past). The Cutters have always nixed that Idea. I can still hear the voice in my head: "Shafe, we're not spending 20 grand so that your buddies can go race in some parking lot"...

:p

Sorry for my harsh response Tom.
Please accept my apology.
I do honestly appreciate your support.
