Hi I have a 318i and I am having a problem with the blower motor for the heater and air conditioning.

It will work only on the highest fan speed (3) the other 2 settings dont do anything.

I have been told that the motor itself has a resistor on it that could cause it not to work, but why would it work only on the highest setting, it shouldnt work at all if the resistor is bad. At least thats my logic. I have changed the switch thinking it could be bad, but I get the same thing???

Can someone please shed some light on my problem, I cant drive around with the heater burning my ass on high or freezing me on high with the air con on. thanks.

Position 3 (high) actually bypasses the resistor, so when the resistor goes bad, it's an open circuit on positions 1 and 2 (low and medium speed, or high resistance and low resistance respectively). That make sense to you now?

Replace the resistor to restore normal operation.
