Hi Guys,

A sidewall failed on one of my tyres on the way to work today so it will need to be replaced. I'm not sure of the milage on the existing tyres because they were replaced before I purchased the car, but they still have heaps of tread left on them. Am I going to cause issues with the X Drive system by replacing the damaged tyre with one of the same make and size? Anyone know what the tolerances are in relation to the tread depth?

You're going to receive a variety of responses I suspect. From the "replace them all" category to "don't worry about it". Personally, I will always replace both tires on any single axle so that xdrive doesn't have to compensate too much unless the tires are so close to new that there has been very little tire wear on the remaining tire.

Are you planning to get a replacement tire that's exactly the same as the other three?
If so, a possible solution would be to find a shop with a tire truing machine, then cut the tread down on the new tire to match the tread wear on the other tires...
Tire truing machines used to be commonly used to treat tires that were out of round & causing vibration unrelated to balancing. The tire turns on the machine, while a spinning blade would cut the high spots of an out of round tire. Today, they just tell you to buy a new tire, but the best, oldest shops still have such a machine (and hopefully the personnel who know how to use it).

Wouldnt two different tires on same axle cause issue with the differential,
not the xdrive?

I'd imagine that the system would perpetually think a tire was slipping and constantly send power forward.

Well after chatting to a few different people and I guy I trust at my tyre place, I just ended up changing the one. I put the two most worn on the same axle, and the least worn + the new tyre on the other. No strange noises/vibrations, no warning lights and it drives fine, so hopefully I'm all good!
