I lost interest in the BMW apps when the iPhone could not do everything done by the Blackberry. I am sure glad that I didn't buy the media snap in because the cockpit is full on long trips with all the gear for my V1 and Redline + Escort LIVE.

I wish they could actually have compatibility of BMW Apps (such as Pandora on screen, World Radio and video Playback) with Blackberry.
But I do love my blackberry and the flexibility of being able to use it as mass storage and just playback the albums in any way I can and transfer songs to and from any computer with drag and drop. Too bad iPhone cannot do that.

Can anyone share real world experience using BMW apps and iPhone 4.
What works or doesn't work ?
I'm amazed the dealer could not do a real demo of that option.
It all works fine. I use web radio and pandora the most. Cancelled Sirius. No point anymore having it. Tried mog for a free month but prefer spotify, so hopefully that app will come eventually.

My only gripe with it is in order to switch from pandora to web radio you have to esnure each app is then active on the iPhone which is a PITA.

Now I'm using BMW Apps. It's not that smart yet, but I think it has potential. I'm not using Facebook or Twitter on the car. Why should I do that in the car through iDrive? But I like the Web radio feature. Yes! It can be run on iPhone without connection with the car. Probably without BMW Apps option, you might be able to listen Web radio through USB connection or bluetooth. Like I said, it's not smart yet.

+1

Yeah, that is kinda lame.

I like it, and I used it for Pandora mostly (plus, I like seeing how much fuel is left in my tank).

This makes little or no sense.

From what i can gather from your reply, you're not using BMW apps in the real sense. You're just using BT audio streaming and whatever audio happened to be active on the phone is routed to the car via BT audio. There is no station selection, no searching and so on via idrive.

This is exactly what I did; station selection, searching, audio quality, etc. via iDrive.
But I did not use a snap-in adapter. I just used USB connection.

every once and awhile I fire up the BWM connect so I can see exactly how many gallons I have in my tank. Other than that, I never use it. I have it just in case because the $250 was not going to affect my life and maybe some day they will have a good app that needs this option

My understanding is that the cradle is needed to stream internet radio stations, play video from iphone, and the ipod-like interface. The local dealership was kind enough to loan me a cradle to try out for a few days.

As far as I can tell, the only thing that you can't do with the cradle is the ipod-like interface and a nice placeholder for charging your phone. I could stream fine via usb cable.

So, the iPod interface is only with the cradle? It would have been nice to hear that BEFORE I paid for BMW Apps!

So let me clarify... If you want an interface that is similar to the IPOD (layout), then yes you need the cradle. If you just simply want to the ability to read from an ipod or iphone (IOS device), then you are fine (as long as you plug into the USB port in the arm rest). You will have the ability to search through by artist, album, and playlists.

Best thing to do is to ask your local dealership to loan you a cradle for a day or two to try it out. I'm really not sure it's worth the $220 for the cradle, as you pretty much have 85% of the capability with just a USB cable.

You need to manually start the Pandora App (at least I do).

Twitter, Facebook, Calendar ... useless.

Have used Pandora and Web Radio function. Grew up in Chicago, Lived 10 years in Indianapolis. Recently moved to Texas. I've been able to get some of the stations in Chicago/Indy on web radio. I'm mostly a Sirius guy anyway.

In reality, for iPhone, lacks any really useful function while driving. I can scan through my phone if I'm stopped so I don't need to see it on the car screen.

If you're shelling out 60-80K on a car, $250 isn't that much to throw in. there may be some useful additions in future, we'll see. Not sure it can be added if you don't get it pre-installed.

Do you need the cradle for Pandora? That option never pops up for me when I plug in via USB only. I only get the twitter/facebook crap.
Don't need the cradle. iPhone cable will work. Start the Pandora app, plug into your BMW via USB. The Pandora screen will read "Pandora ... BMW" and the Pandora logo will show up in your Connected Drive screen.
