Hi Sorry i didn't see your reply thanks for the videos my engine sounds like yours exactly!! But my friends m550d n57d30c (same as my engine) His engine is lot less noisy and the rhythm is also different Smoother dont know why tho!! N57 engines are strong it has bad reputation for rod bearing... But thats mainly because Bmw Is Idiot Saying 24-30tkm Oil intervals And Stupid owners follows this shit no surprise on a euro6 Engine With dpf Egr Etc etc Thr oil gets dirty quickly loosing its ability to Protect the engine. I think with proper care n57 is strong engine Reliable, not as strong As the previous m57 Cast iron block but this 250-350tkm shouldnt be a problem! Oil changes every 8-10 tkm

Don't think the noise is caused by rod bearing , it did not get louder and it does go away after 2500-3000rpm. Also I switched the injector between 1 and 6 and sound changed also and is less noisy now. Next week I will get 6 new injectors and new water pump also. Seen a guy with EXACTLY same noise as mine and went away after changed water pump ! If it was rod bearing the noise would not go away or diminish so much that you can't hear it while the car is in higher RPM ! So this is definitely not bearing noise.

Check his video here , to bad he did not upload anything after changing water pump.

Its not water pump for me at least , my water pump, oil pump, rod bearing, Piston rings, oil cooler etc has been renewed ! As the engine died because previous owner made 30tkm oil change intervals so the compleye engime was rebuilt. I just checked my friends engine his engine sounds like trrrrrrrrrrr and no other sound for me it has the trrrrrrr and then it has other sound above that tapping strange rythm Which his car doesent has !!! I will take it to mechanic april may,,, will update , my engine is like this since i owned it i bought it 2018 with 152tkm rebuilt engine had 1000km now has 265tkm. I take good care off it I let it heat up only after it reach operation temp i go hard with it but after it reach operational i still wait 10 min ... one day we will find out why it has this strange sound either good way by finding the issue or bad way by the engine giving up! But fun fact my car is as fast as the factory qoutes 0-100 in 4.8 seconds 100-200 13.5–14.5 seconds

You say your engine died ??
I bought mine with 300.000km on it , I know risky business, and I made around 40.000km with it. Previous owner used car only for long distances on highway and was good serviced.

The sound on mine is exactly like his sound IF I take the air filter housing out. All my friends tell me I am crazy but I'm not , I hear something different since about 5000km ago. I sold my Jaguar XF with 100.000km on the clocks because of some fucking annoying engine sound and now this :)

I have also changed chains recently but no change. However after I swapped injector position something definitely changed. Now I am waiting for 6 new Bosch injectors and I will install them next week together with water pump and all pulleys. Changed also crankshaft pulley and it made also a slight difference in the idle sound. Anyway I am 100% sure the injectors will make a BIG difference.

I got 6 refurbished ones and had them installed and engine sound was TOTALLY different but I had to send them back because 3 of them were out of tolerance (my tolerance) , then I ordered new ones.
Anyway , engine will always sound different on higher mileage cars , that is sure.

The sound we hear , me and you , might also come from the torque converter.... I will go under when I change the water pump and record close to the gearbox bell housing and will try to use also a stethoscope.. I bet 100 other people out there call us crazy and say car is perfect and they will just drive, but since I started hearing this sound it steps on my brain every time I drive the car, no more music , no more talking , the only thing I hear is the engine sound :( pisses me off.

So for me is the injectors , water pump and pulleys and then God have mercy , I won't invest more money on it ...I'm already down around 4000 eur.

And I DO HEAR your sound , believe me :)

So , injectors changed today. I do notice a change in the sound of the engine but not what I expected to be honest. Engine seems to pull a bit better and it is not so noisy as before while driving.
Saturday is the water pump change and then this is it , I will not change anything anymore. Car runs good and does not ping (injector ping) anymore in low revs.
I could also think the servo hydraulic pump but for now it's a bit to pricey to have it changed also.

Well, I got used with the noise on idle ... and since one week ago I started to hear some strange sound when car goes high in RPM.
You can clearly hear a tapping noise while holding the RPM up.

Found a cracked gasket on the exhaust manifold which I replaced (replaced all 3) but the sound still present.
It does sound like exhaust gases pass by the exhaust manifold but with all gaskets replaced .... I'm out of ideas.

This car drives me nuts.

This car will drive me nuts ... I think the problem is this : We care to much , we hear to much
:)
3 of my friends have same engine and they just drive and don't give a F*** about it and never hear any noise :) ... I am to obsessive to be honest
Hi new here, my car just had the timing chain replaced and sounds the same. 2015 x5 n57diesel. The noise is like yours. Comes from right side of engine and it’s a tapping sound, sounds worse as you increase rpm’s. I do not think it’s a rod or bearing noise but rather a gear or something from a cam? It’s lower rpm than the engine rpm. Constant tap. Did you see and difference with replacing the water pump? Is it gear driven? Thanks!

Stupid BMW!! You mess with innocent people!! Change glow plugs and injector nozzles but avoid Bosch!! The original product company is a cheater!! Please avoid Bosch product and enjoy a smooth silent drive! Why glow plugs when there is no fault? Because they have sensor and work not only at start and there is no way they can monitor the tip with diagnostic or car computer!! Believe it or not new glow plugs will make silent your engine a lot at idle. Why injector nozzles? Bosch material is cheaply made and easily the holes become enlarge: around 30-40k or earlier !!! Don’t touch chains or anything there if is not broken: they last more than 250k!! If this doesn’t solve it then the answer is clear: hyd valves & new injectors(not Bosch)

Yes! It’s easy!
1.Add flush to your engine!! start engine and left it work as instructed on the box. Then empty from down the oil.
2. Then use 5w30 for 20min idle and empty from down.
3. Then refill with expensive oil that has high zinc. Be aware maybe you trap air inside. So change the filter as well to a new. Trapped air will go away after few days.
4. Go to an injector specialist, asked him to take one out and ask to give you the number of the nozzle. Then tell him to put it back! NO CLEANING NO BULLSHIT!! Cleaning will not make the nozzle hole smaller.
5. Contact MONARK Germany and ask for nozzles using the number given to you.
6. Go back to the specialist and give him the nozzles you bought and tell him to install them.
7. Change full flow plugs to Beru brand and same time change control unit to BERU. No Bosch!! Don’t start testing before you change everything, you waste time and money, especially for nozzles!! You will change a working nozzle because the hole of it became big!!
8. Enjoy a silent diesel engine
