BMW F30 340i and F32 440i

Bimmerfest member ynguldyn gazes into his crystal ball to bring us the latest predictions (not guesses) about BMW's future models. The most exciting news is the highly anticipated re-power of the F3x 3 and 4 series line. Not only does the 3 and 4 get BMW's new B line of engines with a power bump but the get new names as well.

All re-engined F3x models will get new designations:
  • 4-cyl B48 engine will have 330i/430i designation instead of 328i/428i
  • 6-cyl B58 engine will have 340i/440i designation instead of 335i/435i.
  • PHEV F30 will come as 330e, not 328e.
If you're excited about the changes slow down, we're not seeing the new F30 330i and 340i and F32 430i and 440i until July of 2016. ynguldyn outlines the schedule for LCI and the new engines below.

F3x Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) schedule
  • F30 and F31 LCI is July 2015 as MY2016. However, 330i is delayed intro, July 2016 as MY2017.
  • All 4-series LCI is March 2016 as MY2017
  • F34 LCI is July 2016 as MY2017
So a 340i will be a B58 turbo six with 340ish hp. 328i probably becomes 330i, but 320i and 330i stay w/ N20 for a few years.

I thought it said they go into production in summer of '15 as a '16 model year.

The last line of the bmwblog.com article(dated July 9th, 2014) says, "BMW 3 Series Facelift will debut late this year with sales beginning in early 2015."

So where does that put the 4 series LCI... Spring '17 as an '18?

The E92/3 had 4 model years ('07, '08, '09, and '10) so if BMW repeats the formula 2016 would be a short year. If the 4 is selling as well as BMW says there doesn't seem to be any reason to accelerate the schedule.

The new numbers don't sound as good. True, the car is still the same, but some numbers sound better than others.

I like:
320i
328i
335i

Also ok would be the:
323i
325i
330i
350i
380i

I don't like the:
321i
324i
329i
332i
340i
344i
349i

Truth in advertising would be:
320t
320xt
320tp (320 turbo plus or toilet paper):p
320xtp (328i x-drive)

Why not 320 turbo, 320 turbo S?

Will the 440i sell well in Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong? They don't like certain numbers. Buick reduced the number of side ports (fake circular vents on the hood) to 3 because of numerology.

I doubt they sell many 335/435s there now as I think the main market for those is the US.

I've seen posters from Singapore and Hong Kong mention that they pay double what we do here so almost no one is going to pony up 100-130k for 3/4 series.

Correct, they won't pay $100-130k, they pay much more.
BMW is one of the biggest sellers in Singapore. Some months they are the biggest.
However, the population is only a couple of million.

China, however, can influence BMW. There, they have a long wheelbase 3 series made only there. They might, along with the US, be the reason the F30 has a cushy ride.

Uhh... been to Singapore or HK? I've been to Singapore a few times both business and pleasure and you would be blown away. They don't bother with the 3er. Tons and tons of 5ers the last time I was there in the E60 era and more 7's too. Taiwan is sorta the same. If you actually have the money you go big and straight for a 7. Nobody messes with 3's or 5's in Taiwan, but 7 series are around. Funny how that works.

More than double. I used to live in Singapore. The issue is that besides buying the car, people need to buy a certificate to drive that car and each certificate lasts for 10 years. These are bid up to astronomical levels. I believe a 435i in Singapore would costs about $250,000 USD.

I was going to say the same thing. I have been to HK numerous times. There are LOTS of very nice cars on the road there. As many or more than any US city I have been to.

A year after the Sedan. The Coupe/'Vert were introduced a year after the sedan was. Expect it to also be on sale a year after the sedan stops production in Oct. 2018.

The F30 Sedan was introduced first as a MY2012. The F32 Coupe was introduced first as a MY2014. So in this case 2 years after the sedan.

The main issue I see is with the engine. I can't imagine BMW producing both the NXX engines as well as the BXX engines. If the refresh 3 comes out with the BXX engine, there would be less incentive to by the coupe with the NXX engine.

The Cooper S Works is getting a version of the new 2.0L turbo w/ 230 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Sounds like the engine is almost ready for the 328i (330i).

The F30 Sedan was introduced first as a MY2012. The F32 Coupe was introduced first as a MY2014. So in this case 2 years after the sedan.

The main issue I see is with the engine. I can't imagine BMW producing both the NXX engines as well as the BXX engines. If the refresh 3 comes out with the BXX engine, there would be less incentive to by the coupe with the NXX engine.
In the past BMW has changed the engine without changing the body style. For example, when the E46 came out as a 323i, the E36 coupe was equipped with the same engine until it was time to change its body style to the E46.
