Bought a used replacement instrument cluster - do I need to program it?

Looks like my instrument cluster is bad so I bought a used one from ebay.
The seller says it has 125k miles on it. My X5 has about 150K on it.

I haven't found real clear info on if I need to program the new one. What I have read is that if the replacement cluster has more mileage, the X5 will pick up the miles from the cluster, and vice versa.

Is there anything I need to do besides just popping the replacement in?

I've seen youtube videos about "virginizing" clusters before installing but not sure if that's needed- and it requires standalone programming equipment to wipe the cluster before installing on the car.

Thanks for the info.
I've had trouble finding info specifically for the E70 so I'm not sure it's apples to apples with the E90.

Considering the cluster I bought has less mileage than my car actually has, I assume the car will overwrite the mileage on the cluster once installed.

What I'm getting at here is, is there a downside to just putting the replacement cluster in?

Once I read the bit about desoldering the EEPROM from the cluster, my eyes kinda glazed over.
And I was an electronic technician back in the day when EEPROMs were in sockets and had that little glass window on top of them.
But I don't think much good could come from me trying to remove a surface mounted component.

And then there's the bit about the R270+ programmers with the red board and the blue board and some work and some don't... [emoji2962]

The new used instrument cluster arrived and it has solved one problem. Its now alive. The original was completely dead- no lights, no nothing.

It has inherited my true mileage of 155K but the tamper dot does show up. I think I can let that go for now unless it prevents me from diagnosing the other problems.

The other problems - front wipers are always running. The wiper stick on the column has no effect. The blinker stick doesn't do anything either so it could be the steering column cluster but ista should be able to tell me more now that the instrument cluster works.

Correct yes, the cluster needs your VIN to remove the tamper dot. If you have ncsexpert just try to SG-CODIEREN which will flash defaults and VIN "If" possible! If you cannot flash the VIN you will unfortunately need to wipe the VIN from the EEPROM.

Also, with some of the issues you mention with the turn signals and what not, have you bricked the FRM module? If you have ISTA+ it may be worth seeing if you have communication with the module.

You would basically follow this to 3:49 but select SG-CODIEREN then Execute Job. The only problem you may have following that tutorial is at the start when he loads the profile. You may have a profile called revtors or BMW Factory Coding, revtors would be better, if not try the factory coding if you have it. Be slightly careful as some profiles can change things a little but as long as you make sure you've selected KOMBI and SG-CODIEREN you'll be okay.

Cleared codes and it's... better but still has a long way to go.
I'm simultaneously in the middle of the cup holder fix and have the center console dismantled at the moment. I'm going to finish that job up before doing anything more with ista since I now have a number of connections unhooked.
It may also not be a bad idea if I create a new thread regarding these codes since it's no longer a question of replacing the instrument cluster. I think that question has been answered - it does need coding but as far as I can tell the only impact is the tamper dot.
On the other hand, that may be why KOMBI (aka instrument cluster module) is in yellow below. I didn't think to drill down into it when I had it hooked up earlier but I'll check on it this weekend.

All,

I have an 2016 F85 X5M almost 90k on it. The left signal light on the cluster is out. I have removed the cluster and dissembled it. Tested LED light on green board with 3v battery, works off the battery test. When installed on the car the light on the cluster still not working. I am at the point where i want to buy a used cluster off of ebay same model, can someone tell me what software I need and instructions on what is needed how to clear the memory from a used cluster and program to my car?

I do have INSTA + running on a virtual machine on a laptop but i have not tried it on the x5m

Thank you.
Frank
