Boy, do I need help!

A while back, Alee was gracious enough to share his new version 18 Nav software with many of us. I downloaded it and just put it on disk today. I followed the directions and I have a BIG problem. I first put in the CD-Software CD and saw that it was loading because of the progress bar on the screen. Then, after it fully loaded, it just froze there and never asked me for the Key-CD. I waited for 20 minutes. Anyway, I tried to eject the software CD from the disk reader in the back and IT WON'T EJECT!!! I have tried everything and don't know what to do. It sounds as if the thing is broken. You know that sound it makes right when it ejects? Well, I hear that slightly but I think something may be jammed or broken. Could I have broken it just by putting this disk in there? I mean, I would think that you could put any disk in there and it would eject if you press the button. Now, it won't. I really don't want to go to the dealer because I have a feeling that they are going to blame me for the malfunction. Guys, I have no idea what the hell to do!!! Please help. Anything....

I guess you can't hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, can you?

Next best thing is a cold boot. Try disconnecting the battery.

Gotta love Windows...

If I disconnect the battery, what else am I going to effect? Am I going to get any crazy error lights on the dash or something else like that?

Disconnecting your battery will have NO harmful effects.

EDIT-

Let me add that I do not have the NAV system and have never even seen one in person. My "disconnect the battery advice", while probably worth a shot, is not based on ANY personal experience. I am reasonably confident, however, that there is no risk of damaging anything or setting off any warning/check lights.

well,

I actually disconnected the unit and it still won't eject after plugging it back in. You know, I think this is the most freek thing. The one time I attempt to stick another disk in there, it breaks! I am fairly confident that it's just broken and that it has nothing to do with the disk itself. I guess I will be calling the dealer and try to see what they will do for me. I am out of ideas. :( Thanks for the suggestion though.

Cliff, this definitely sounds (I say that with the same disclaimer as TD) like a physical problem with the eject mechanism and it shouldn't cost you anything to get it repaired under warranty since it most definitely doesn't have anything to do with the disc (unless the disc happened to be a hammer instead ;)). Good luck getting it fixed up!

webguy330i .......

That's exactly what I think that it's a physical problem. It's just ironic that it would happen now when I attempt to upgrade. The only problem is, that I had written v.18 Nav update on the CD so if a technician see's that, they can claim that I screwed it up because "technically," v.18 isn't for my nav year. It's also illegal that I copied that disk and I am afraid that I could get into trouble. My only guess is if I can take out the unit it self and somehow open it up and take the disk out. Or pry it out. Then, just claim that it's broken and they will replace it. They just can't see that disk though!!!

I wouldn't worry about it that much. When you go in, ask to talk with the tech that will be working on your car. Explain the situation to him after you've verified that he's a "cool" guy (i.e. laid-back, not uptight, not too straightedge). Tell him you'd be eternally greatful if he'd just overlook the disc itself, then tell him there's a real nav disc in the trunk and if he needs to show anyone that he can just flash that one instead. ;)

Seriously, get buddy-buddy with the tech and see how it goes. I still wouldn't worry about it too much. Just tell him a friend stuck it in there if it comes down to that.

Alright, I guess that's what I will have to do. I was even thinking about a more artful approach. I took out the whole disk reader and looked at the back which had a warrenty sticker on it. It was put across an edge so that if the unit is opened, it would void warrenty. I had a friend who peeled the sticker off CAREFULLY, and photocopied it at kinkos on a sticker paper. So, then, I would open the unit myself and take it out with my bare hands. Then, put the copied sticker on it. Pretend like it's malfunctioning and that's that. To tell you the truth, I like your way better because it's less time consuming and "cleaner" so to speak. Sheeshhh, I hate doing trickery stuff like this. Thanks for the good advice! Much appreciated.

Hehe, that's a pretty devious plan too. =)

Good luck bro, I hope everything works out. Remember, be very *nice* and *forgiving* and make friends with both the service people and the techs. It's paid off for me more times than I can remember. =)

ok...

Alright.... this is the deal. I spoke to a tech who actually knows one of my friends so I explained the deal to him. He's a really nice guy. But, he said that if you have a CD in there that is copied and labeled V.18 nav update, there could be a problem. He also said that he doesn't want any part of it if I bring it in to the dealer. So, this is what I am going to do: I will make an appointment with the dealer and tell them that the nav system isn't working. I guess the worst thing is that they tell me I have to buy a new one which costs $650!!!! The only thing that I am worried about is any legal actions since I do have pirated software in there that is labeled "v18 nav update." Man, I am screwed. If I can't this out, I will just have to buy a new one.
Also, the tech said that after market CD's are alittle thicker than regular ones and sometimes they jam. So, if you are planning to do this, I would suggest not to.........from my experience. -C

Cliff any chance it has one of those little holes like normal computer CD-ROM drives where you can stick a paperclip and manually eject the CD tray?
WOW!

As a matter of fact, I looked for a manual eject just as you stated. But, found no such thing. HOWEVER, I HAVE GOOD NEWS! I got the disk out. It's took complex to explain in detail but with many tools like, a long and very thing allen wrench screw driver, a paper index card, a key from my mothers jeep cherokee, a think paper clip to use as a hook and a strong but thin metal 4 inch piece, I got it out. Had to puch springs down on both top and bottom, push these two plastic guards down all while I used the paper clip to hook the center hole of the CD! The hard part was keeping everything in place. Now, I can bring it to the dealer with out any evidence that I had a CD-R inserted. I can't tell you how much I was sweating over this. I am soooo releved that I got it out. I bet the insides don't look to good from all the scratching but that's ok. I want to thank EVERYONE who wrote me with suggestions and or comments to help. I appreciate the warm atmosphere here unlike the bimmer.org. So thank you to all. I have learned a valuable lesson here not to stick a CD-R in the nav unit ever again. Let this be a lesson to everyone so it doesn't happen again because it was a ***** to get out. :) :) :) :) :)

WTF? What dealer is this? That's like 6 weeks off. That's insane.

Anything more than 10 days out is ridiculous. (And, IMO, THAT is even ridiculous.)

Yeah, it's Rallye Motors of Roslyn. I live on Long Island. I regret buying my car from there as I have heard horror stories. One guy who after servicing his car at Rallye, had a terrible odor like something died in his car. For a week, he couldn't figure it out. Then, he decided to inspect it more closly and found that there had been a aluminium plate of chinese food left under his seat. It was like a blend of rotting meats and wonton soup. Another gentleman said that they forgot to put the cap on his radiator or something like that and as soon as he pulled out of the dealership, all this fluid was spilling out of his car. He stopped down the street which was like a few 1000 feet and they had to tow his car back to the dealer. Certainly not the best service. Part of the problem is that his dealer sells cars as many times as you blink your eye lids a day and they can't keep up with the service. A another quick one.... When I had bought my car from there, I asked them not to put there name badge on the back of my car. It's a metal piece stuck on with double stick tape. I had them write it down and I saw them write it. And gues what, when i picked it up, it was stuck on there. I was so pissed. Then, I called up and said that I wanted them to remove it. They said I would have to wait a few weeks because I needed an appt. AN APPOINTMENT FOR THAT? I took it into my own hands after realizing how easy it was to take off. Enough ranting... lol
