Brakepads that throw less dust???

1619 Views 11 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  TC330Ci
Does anyone have a recommendation for brakepads that will throw less dust? I hate to complain 'cause I know everyone has the same problem, BUT I am so sick of cleaning my wheels twice a week. Thanks.

I put on the mintex red box pads from Bavarian auto and after 2 weeks there is almost no dust. pads feel great and no noise.
No good solutions that I've heard of.
In part it depends on how you drive, though. I went through pads and rotors in 10,000 miles. Obviously, ANYTHING that compromises brake performance and longevity is NOT an option for me. The big problem with dustless pads is that they have a tendency to eat rotors.

Whatever you do, don't put those dorky brake shields on. They just look stupid and screw up your brakes.

I'm using Mintex Red box, and they throw significantly less dust than my OEM pads. I'll be switching to EBC greens next week, which I hear work better than Mintex.
I just put the Pagid HP brakes on from Bav Auto. They have better braking traits and as far as I can tell less dust. They claim no additional rotor wear
EBC Green pads will be going on the next car in my house to require replacement. They have been getting some insane reviews, like in SCC where an RSX had just the pads and wheels/tires changed and the brake distance went from 133ft to 116 or something like that. It was the only car in the all-RSX test to be running EBC brake pads and somehow posted the shortest brake distances. Some of the cars had huge 6-piston calipers and aftermarket rotors!

Sounds good to me.

EBC pads

Well I have the EBC greens on my 330Ci and I hate them!
The dust is less, but still there. The worst part is the feel. I swore that I had air in my liness, the pedal felt really bad. They don't have the same initial bite, the brakes don't engage until the pedal is half way down (i.e. twice as far as the stock.) If you pump them a second time the pedal does go up. (yes, they were bed in and I have over 1K mi on them) I bled the brakes twice and then had them professionally power bled with no improvement. I put the stock pads back on and they felt great.

Must be the nature of Kevlar brakes, but I don't like them. I used them on the track this past Friday and they do stop the car and held up pretty well, but they don't have the same feel and are more difficult to modulate. Oh, and there was a lot of brake dust after Friday.

Personally, I don't like them. I would like to try the Axxis, Pagid or Porterfield pads. I'm thinking about one set for the street and one for track/auto-x. I would be interested in oter opinions.

Pagid and Porterfield pads will give you that same result, unless you go to their high performance pads (more carbon, less metal). I'm running Pagid Street and Raffi is running Porterfields and we're both noticing the same thing -- The brake feel isn't as linear as the stock pads. The first 1/4 travel feels like it's not grabbing, but when you're STOMPING on the brakes they stop on a dime.

Someone at the track was telling us about a place called Carbotech (or something like that) that sells exclusively carbon pads that are affordable...~$100 each axel. I might try that next.

EBC's

Hack,
Glad to hear I'm not the only one. With all the great reviews, I was begining to think it was just me. Thanks for the info on Pagid and Porterfield. I'm thinking about getting a set of Porterfield race compound and a set of slotted rotors for the front, that I only use on the track and auto-x. Let me know if you find any other pads that work better.

Well, I put in my EBC Greens last night, along with some EBC Rotors, and man, they're great so far. Initial bite is far superior to the Mintex/Zimmerman combo I had only before.
I've only got about 30 miles on them now, but overall, I'm much happier than with the Mintex.

I don't have any of that weird pedal feel that TC330 had. The pedal feels solid, and firm throughout.
One downside is that the pads stink when you bed them in. Dunno if it's the kevlar or what..

Glad to hear they work for you. Maybe some different rotors would help my situation. Let me know if things change for you. As far as smell, they stink every time you do some really hard braking.
