Brakes not covered under warranty if raced?

1696 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ayn
I did some searching and couldn't find anything, so I figured I would ask the group.

I brought my car in to get serviced today. I have a brake shimmy felt in the wheel, the petal and the assmeter.

I know it is the rotors, and I can also here a squeeling as I drive. I have taken my car to the track twice. The last time was over 20K miles ago.

My service advisor said the mechanic stated my replacements weren't covered under warranty because I had "raced" the car.

Well I never raced it. I only went to driving schools.

Am I wrong here? Should I get brakes for free? I have 36844 miles, but bought the extended warranty.

any help?

If it is a warranty item or full maintainance item, they cannot refuse replacement because of your driving school.

Read the warranty manual. It says "Competetive events" are not covered, driving schools are non-competetive in nature. Talk to the service manager, then talk to BMWNA if they don't cover it.

At your milage, you are out of full maintainance, so if it is defective and not worn, the rotors should be replaced. If it is simply worn out, then you are out of luck....

One other thing... Telling them that you tracked the car at all is a foolish, verging on stupid move. Do NOT give the dealer any additional reasons to deny your request. They have enough already.
Most of the people at the dealerships around here know I track my car religiously and they didn't say a thing when it came to replacing my rotors and pads under service maintenance :D

Even if you do, it "shouldn't" matter :p

Service maintenance is one thing. The brakes are covered under the service contract for however long, 3 years or 36K miles since they're wear and tear items. However, don't confuse that with the 5 year 50K mile warranty. If you're outside of the 3 years/36K miles period, good luck getting them to replace the brakes for you.

Brakes and rotors are only covered if you have Full Maintenance coverage. They are not included if you have Scheduled Maintenance coverage.

The reason I know that is I just got a 2002 530i that has Full Maintenance and I just CPO'd my 323i (that I'm buying now at lease end) which had Scheduled Maintenance. I was thinking about extending the Scheduled Maintenance on the 323i, but found out it would not include breakes/rotors, so it wasn't worth it. It would only have given me one oil service.

So without Full Maintenance, brakes/rotors should only be covered under the warranty if defective, rather tha n just worn.

update

Just wanted to give everyone and update. The car is getting new rotors today for free. And I'll pay for the pads.

for the record, the pads were only 25% worn and the rotors were warped. So the service manager's argument that I drive to hard seems to be unfounded.

if u did driving schools, it is covered. if you brought it to club races, then maybe it wont be.

I highly recommend a brake fluid flush before each track weekend, ss lines also might help. and dont forget to bleed your clutch as well...
