I have a 2004 530i. The computer mpg is way off. Is there a way to recalibrate this? Local dealer says no. Need to confirm whether or not I am just stuck. Thanks for any information.

Out of curiosity, how do you know it is way off? I assume you've reset it several times but to no avail?

Computer mpg way off.

I bought the car in Louisville, KY and drove it back to Albuquerque, NM. I checked the mileage and reset the computer at every fill-up on the way home. The computer was consistently about 22% optimistic. Do you have an answer to my question?

I can't answer your question, but. I checked mine. It was always optimistic. After I had my dash pixals repaired my indicated MPG went way down. I'm not sure what that may have had to do with it, I haven't checked it since. I should get a chance in a couple of weeks.

Your car is calculating mpg using imperial gallons, which are about 22% larger than U.S. gallons. The E60 can be reprogrammed to calculate mpg by U.S. gallons.

And I hope the deal was really good to justify all that driving...;)

Yes, the system can be recalibrated. I have done it as mine was about 1-2 mpg high. It is now dead accurate to the tenth of a mpg, consistently tank to tank and I check every tank. Just do a search and find the write up on how to get into the system. It is a bit tricky.

Interesting. According to my trusty HP48SX:

1 galUK = 1.201 galUS

Great work from the fellow 'festers...gotta love this board sometimes.

If you have an earlier build (pre Feb 05), the dealership has to do it. If you have software 16.0 or greater, I believe it's under the "units" menu under "vehicle settings." I can't vouch for the later, as I don't have 16.0 yet.

Wow. At first I thought you were being sarcastic. Nice catch.

Fantastic!

Fantastic. You were exactly right and I was able to reset the units to US gal.

Thanks again for your help. I'm not sure why the "Master Certified Techs" do not know this.

What mpg are you all getting on E60 530i??

I just bought a 05 530i. I know it will get better but I am only getting 16mpg on average city and hwy driving... I think it is way low. I have reset it when I refill to measure. The car now has 900 miles on it. I think I am way off....

I was getting just under 20 mpg on my 545i during my wild 5 days/1250 miles in Europe.

Try using good old pencil and paper and see how it compares to the BMW computer.
