I took my 99 Z3 Coupe in becuase my ASC and ABS lights were flickering the past week. They found fault code # 71 which basically said that they should replace the Hydro Unit 34-51-6-756-287.

After that, the following text is in on the work order/invoice

"I read the ASC fault memory and found Fault Code 71. The fault was not present. I activated the pump motor and found that it worked. I called "Tech Hotline" and talked to Rick in the "Body and Chasis" group. He advised me to replace the complete hydrolic unit. I replaced the hydro unit and bled the brake system using the Modic to activate pump. I recoded the new modules and test drove the vehicle. No faults.

After the vehicle was worked on it could not be started by the car wash. I rechecked connections and performed a short test. I found that the EWS and DME was not alligned. I alligned the two and rechecked. The car now starts."

So what does is an EWS and DME?
What does he mean by not alligned?
Any ideas what the ph# is of this Tech Hotline?

The DME is the main computer, and the EWS controls the ignition. If they are not "aligned", the car will not start.

The Techline is available only to dealer personell. The first thing they ask for when you call is your SSN, and they verify from that info if you are in fact a BMW Center employee.

Hi guys, can someone please tell me where I can locate this Hydrolic unit on my BWM please.

I seem to have the same problem with my bimmer, ABS light on and I have had the error code looked at and all I can see is that it says error code "71 pump motor".

Thanks

I really like this bit "After the vehicle was worked on it could not be started by the car wash" :)

Two things here.

1. I have never been able to start my car using a car wash. I always have to use a key. Could this be a factory option I am missing?

2. I would go back an ask them to repair the car wash start feature they obviously broke.

Aren't words great!

code 71

hi there
the code 71 means that the abs pump motor is a fault. it is more likely that the control module is not sending power to the motor.this is more common than a faulty motor.
check out modulemasters in idaho they repair them for around 150.00.
if you buy a new one (1000.00) or a used one you have to have it programed to your car. that can only be done at the dealer.
hope this helped

Hello Murray, thank you for your reply and advice.
Can I further say I have since then purchased a used abs and ecu controller and ready to fit it in. Cost £40GBP looks in good condition but will have to see once fitted.
I'm in the UK and parts are quit easy to get a hold of :)
Same part number and serial number and I didn't think I had to reprogram it to my bmw?.
Is this true Murray?.

Thanks

Mac

The new/used/remanufactured units DO have to be alinged/synced/programmed to match YOUR car. No way around it.

However, it does not have to be done by a "dealer;" an independant shop with the proper equipment can also do this.

abs module

[hi there
it is to my understanding that every module is unique to the vehicle it came out of. although a module looks good that does not mean it is. if the used module is good i believe you will have to have it programed to your car. this will have to be done by the dealer. the same as a new one would also have to be programed to your car. not sure if you have someone in the UK that rebuilds them but that is the way i would go.
module masters in the USA will rebuild yours for 150.00 us dollars plus 28.00 for shipping
and garentee it for 5 years. you would have to check with them to see if yours is rebuiltable. some are and some are not.
hope i helped you out

Thanks you gents, I'm going to be fitting this unit sometime soon and hopefully sort out this mess!.

Will let you know the outcome once finished.

Here's a weird thing that may help a few guys having auto trans issues who also have probs with abs fault!.
I was told to unplug the ABS ecu connection by a specialist who repairs auto boxes as i also have an Auto trans fault problem and now the issue with trans has disappeared and gears are changing and working fine.

Regards

AutoLogics is the manufacturer of a diagnostic computer, with virtually all the capability of the factory sourced units. http://www.autologic-diagnos.com/en-us/pages/homeproducts

If it has the capability...
Thanks again for your responce to my question. :)

Now I see what you mean :)

I have Vagcom that works with VAG vehicles so hopefully a full version of snap on will do the trick and if not then a trip to my local bwm specialist for a reset bleed etc.

Will keep you updated once I get this sorted.

Kind regards

Mac

Guys no need to program early models unless it has a steering angle sensor!.
