Hey everyone. I purchased a 2020 Z4 a few days ago and I have about 5 days left to return it. One of the big ones for me is if Android Auto works, as it existed in other 2020's that I test drove.

Behavior before coding:
Phone would connect with bluetooth and thats it. In the android auto menu, it said no cars available. The car also did not have the Android Auto app.

What I did:
When I bought the car and went to Remote Software Upgrade, it was running 2019/07 software and said no updates available. I then got ISTA+, E-SYS, and psdzdata full 4.53.21. I did a full car update with ISTA+ and the only error was regarding needing a paid code to update the active sound ECU. No fault codes detected when doing a full readout. When going back in the car, it now says the software revision is 2025/03. I did a full head unit reset, deleted all phones and reconnected.

Behavior now:
The car shows the latest software revision which should have android auto. After updating, the phone now says "Looking for Android Auto" but it never finds anything. The car does not have the Android Auto app, however the phone does say that wireless android auto is available on the BMW.

On the bimmerpost forum someone said they saw Android Auto settings in the ECU when using BimmerCode/BimmerUtility. I took a peek and saw the same settings.

These two were already marked aktiv

This one was marked nicht_aktiv so I enabled it

I then did a hard reset of the head unit, but the android auto app still is not showing up.

I was really hoping this would work, but I am left in the same position. Any help with this would be appreciated, I have tried everything within my power and have come up with nothing.

My vin is WBAHF3C08LWW56122

I'm new to all this so I'm going to assume I didn't update services. I've checked for software upgrades and app updates on the car head unit but they both say none available. If it's activated over a provision file, what does that mean for me?

Thank you for the help, it's been a real headache.

This mean you don’t need any fsc. Look your last picture in post 1 and push on idrive controller option and than Update Services. Be sure that you have a good signal to pull provision file from BMW. Second thing what you can do is turn on diagnostic mode(3x start/stop button without break) than press and hold volume button til navi goes black(about 30 sec)and turn it on again.

Where is the iDrive controller option? I've held down on Installed Apps until the option appears to check for app updates. The car says none available. I've been in diagnostic mode multiple times for updates along with the head unit resetting but I'm not sure if I've done both at the same time. I will give it a shot.

Please forgive me as I'm not yet familiar with all the terms and functions, what exactly is it I'm looking for/what does that mean?

This is what I can find:

Step 1: Read and Edit VO

1. Open E-Sys

2. Go to Expert Mode > Coding

3. Click Read FA (VO)

4. Expand the FA tree and look under SALAPA-Element

5. Check for:

6C4 (must be present)

If not there, right-click FA > Edit

Add 6C4 (and optionally 6CP, 6U3 if missing)

6. Click Save and then Activate FA

Step 2: VO Code the MGU

1. After activating FA:

2. In the ECU list, locate HU_MGU

3. Right-click on HU_MGU → Code
(Do not choose "Code FDL", just "Code")

This will apply the newly updated VO to your head unit.

I conducted the above procedure, all the elements were already there in the FA. Regardless I activated it, rebooted the MGU, still no android auto.

Your coding are all good but I think because BMW server still showing old software in your car look picture you are not getting right provisioning file. You will need online ISTA to read a car and save your actual Istep to BMW server.

I appreciate you taking a look. So what does this mean for me? Do I have to go to a dealer and pay $400 after all? I'm surprised the car doesn't sync it's istep remotely. Can I contact BMW genius people and tell them my cars istep version (or can they check it remotely and update the provisioning file for my vin)?

Edit: seems like I can get access to genuine ISTA+ for 24 hours from bmwtechinfo. Can I use this with my ENET cable to run an online connected version of ISTA so the data sync with BMW servers?
