Reading all these threads about handling, suspension, drivetrain etc. , a question came to my mind :

Are the designs of the components in cars patented ? For instance , can any other car manufacturer copy the front suspension design or the multi link rear suspension design of the BMW and put its own car ?

A better example of a patent is the Wanker engine. Didn't one of your countrymen made lots of money selling the idea to an upstart Japanese car company?
