I have a 2004 X5 with reclining back seats and I am looking for a cargo cover.
Why is there a special one for the reclining back seats and where can I find one? I am only finding them new and they are one $400 where I can find the covers for non-reclining for under $175 used.

Figured I would ask here.

I have no clue where you can find a used cover for $175...you'll just have to select the correct part nbr for the color & type you need for your vehicle and shop for it until you find a price you're willing to pay. I believe if you can find images of both...you'll see that the mounting parts may be slightly different...which means that the side parts (see 2nd diagram below) may have different part nbrs based on build date and options.

The face lift models (like your 04)...not only has the reclining seat option...but the cargo cover changed from an accordion style roll-up...to a full retraction within the cassette that holds the cover.

You can see the 2 different designs if you look up the diagram for the cargo cover...and they also have different parts along the sides of the cargo area & where it mounts on each side:
