Early spy shots of a four-door 2 Series have been captured by our spy photographers. The shots give some hints as to what the upcoming, front-wheel-drive 2 Series will look like.

Although it’s being sold as a four-door version of the 2 Series that we know and love here, it actually shares a chassis code with the Chinese 1 Series. That’s why this one drives the front wheels, rather than the rear wheels.

Despite sending power to a different set of wheels, the engine options are expected to mirror the 2 Series Coupe, though rumors suggest that the M240i’s straight six won’t be available (not from launch, anyway).

Still, since the 2 Series Gran Coupe is based on the same UKL platform as the Mini, it may still get some driving pleasure, though its purity might be questioned. With xDrive expected as an option, you might eventually be able to kick the rear end out with the liberal application of throttle on slippery roads.

Expect to see the 2 Series Gran Coupe make its debut in 2021. BMW reportedly plans to sell this car globally, so expect to see it here in America, too.
