Cell Phone Mount options?

2504 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Rich_Jenkins
Can anyone recommend a good cell phone mount for a StarTac? I am not looking for a hands free kit, just something not too obtrusive that will hold the phone and give me easy access to dialing and my wired ear piece. Are the universal clamp-type ones that fit on the vents any good or will they break the vent?

I use the CCM Navigator. It's a holder, charger, and hands free kit in one. No drilling or velcro tape required. The whole thing just plugs into the cigarette lighter.

I am hoping to find a less expensive option since I don't use the phone all that much in the car. I really just need a good hoder so I can just press talk and go rather than find the phone, open it, and then press talk. Just trying to cut down on my distractions and keep my eyes on the road. :D

As far as all in one pieces, I do like that mount. I wonder if it would get in the way of a manual?

CCM sells the older version for $20 less.

Older Navigator

I bought an extra extension section which moves the whole unit up and out of the way.

I have a vent clip, that I got from Verizon as an accessory. The trick is that it has a little prop on the underside, so the weight is really supported by the bottom frame of the vent hole, NOT by the slats/grille of the vent. I use it with a hands-free kit that plugs into the lighter, but it works fine just as a holder, too.

The nice thing about the vent clip is that it's "universal": it can hold a phone that has a spring-loaded belt-clip, or a phone that has a knob on the back (like some Nokias do).

Hey AWD330,

How does the navigator work? What is the sound quality both for you and for the person on the other end? Did you have to raise it up so high to get adequate sound quality, or was that just personal preference? Did you try any others before you decided on the navigator, such as the ones which route the sound out your stereo system?

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks. I'll try my Verizon store. Any idea of who makes it?

I actually purchased the Navigator for a previous car. Since it didn't require drilling or tape, I only had to unplug it to transfer it to another car. Before the Navigator, I had a different kit with a velcro mount holder and a speaker/charger unit that plugged into the lighter. The cord which ran from the unit to the phone was always getting jammed between the seat and the console. The Navigator is a much cleaner solution.

The best sounding car phone I ever had was a dedicated mobile phone. The speaker was built into the handset, and a separate microphone was wired above the windshield. People couldn't tell that I was on a cell phone. While the Navigator is not as clear as a real hardwired mobile phone, the sound quality is still fairly decent. I have the older model, and the main problem I have is a bit of a lag when switching back and forth between talkers. I sometimes feel like I should follow military convention by ending each piece of dialog with the word "over" - example: "This is awd calling dj, over..."

Regarding positioning of the Navigator, I purchased an extra extension piece so that I could raise it up high on the dash. Positioning doesn't seem to affect sound quality. I just like having it higher to avoid blocking console features. The high position also makes it easier for me to glance at the Caller ID info. I usually don't bother answering the phone when I'm driving unless it's someone I need to talk to right away.

My local cell phone stores (Verizon and Wireless Zone) both carry the Navigator. Maybe you could check your local stores and see if they have a demo model that you could try out in the parking lot?

No, it was Verizon branded. Mine was part of a kit that included the vent clip, a leather case, and a car charger. I'm sure they can be bought separately.
Here you go...The ultimate solution.

AWD,
Thanks for the lengthy and informative reply. I will check out a local Verizon store and see if they have one to try.

I've got a vent clip that I got from theclip.com that I use with my LG. I put the phone in the hoslter and then the hoslter through the opening in the top of the clip. It works quite well. You should also try circuit city. They carry a vent clip made by Belkin for less than 10 bucks.

Just received one of these myself.

Excellent product. Cheap too, about 32 bucks on the 'net. I plugged in my phone (Nokia 3360) and it worked great. Quality seems high, esp for the price. Sound quality was, well, ok not exactly like the stereo but perfectly understandable.

I tried the additional mount piece it came with to raise it up a little higher, but it was too wiggly, so I left it on the one mount. Due to position near the gear knob it is a little close when engaging reverse, but I can work around it.

Very useful, I'd give this a
