So if there's no dip stick his does one check the tranny level?
What if uou have a small leak ?

Its just like checking the fluid in a stick shift since bmw stupidly didn't provide a dipstick.

Search a do it yourself trans fluid change to find pictures of the bolt to remove and then just fill it up with the car running in park till the fluid comes back out the hole.

Your car likely has an auto tranny made by GM of France. The pan's bottom should be flat and smooth. The fluid fill/level check plug is on the drivers side of the tranny.

On the top of the motor there's a cap that says ATF ONLY ,
I assume that's where I can add fluid? Why else would that be there?

Thirteen years old and 137K miles likely needs full automatic transmission maintenance; replace the sleeves and fluid and filter.

That's the power steering not the transmission.

If you have a small leak then you should:

a) find out why it's leaking
b) fix leak
c) replace filter and fluid using the correct fill procedure

Just to clarify for jetsjunkie, the power steering system takes automatic transmission fluid. Counter intuitive, but one less fluid to keep on the shelf.

Might as well replace the fluid, change the filter, gasket and bolts. The leak needs to be addressed because if the level gets too low you run the risk of burning out the pump and the trans will fail.
