Clutch all the way to the floor?

Should you always push the clutch to the floor (as I was taught) or can you simply push it past the engagement point and shift?

You should, but not because of wear.
BMW's new clutches are "self-adjusting"
The translation of this is that they are vague, numb and have a MOBILE engagement point. You need to push them the exact same distance every time in order to keep the engage point in the same place.
