On the following assumptions:
Not every Detroit auto engineer is a fool...
Despite not making too many whole cars that sell well, the big 3 make a few decent engines.
Lots of spare labor at otherwise idle plants, or soon to be idled plants...
So why not have the big 3 factories contract out for the rest of the world's automakers?
For example; just have the Big 3 phone up the rest of the world's automakers and concede the last 20% of U.S. and Canada market share, in exchange for selling engines and assembly labor for otherwise foreign cars??
Maybe as part of that, let the Big 3 make a few decent whole cars of their own that they have... (i.e. Corvette, Silverado, F-150, Mustang, etc... ), but otherwise cancel everything else...
Just a thought -- maybe something to keep the U.S. auto industry jobs going... :dunno:
Maybe it's a dumb idea... just throwing it out there...
