Greets,

This is something I've noticed occurring over the last couple of weeks.

As I brake, right before I come to a stop I'll sometimes hear a crunching type noise. It seems like it's coming from the front.

This noise doesn't sound metallic, rather, it sounds like the ABS system is engaging. I don't feel anything in the pedal, though, and at this time, I do not have any warning lights on.

It seems to happen more
- when the car is cold
- when I brake slightly harder than normal

It does not happen when I brake very lightly or very hard.

Clues?

TIA

Duplicate the problem for them, thats what I did when my tranny was having problems.
Rox, did you look at your breaks? How do the rotors look like? Is the caliper spring still there? Compare right to left wheel. Post pictures here if you can. Maybe your pad is gone?

Slvr, nice car. Your AE lights, are they stock or aftermarket? I like them. What do you have?

I think its like my 98 e39 528.... its the brakes!!!! You''ll need to replace the pads and rotors. You can take them apart and clean it, but it will only last a few weeks. :tsk: Might be a cheap option than spending money. It is the most annoying thing about this car. Hope this helps

Hmmm, his pads/rotors were done in the last year...they should be okay. Roxy, when was it that we did your pads? Did we do your rotors as well...I forget.

OT: Is that a GB plate? If so, where did you get it from?!
I got it from some site called autogeeks.com or something like that, can't remember but it had geek in it I think. I did a custom mounting of it too, when I got M5 trim on my car to get rid of the non-sport (non-shadowline) trim, it came with the front plate delete. I drilled small holes in the front plate delete part and mounted it flush, curving cleanly around the front bumper. No bolts showing, no screws showing. It looks perfect. I will take some detailed photo's of it or maybe do a DIY sometime because I think it is really cool.

They are aftermarket depo Projector39's. I am very happy with them. I'm sure you have heard of an "old comon problem", depo's fog up, they have heard the complaints and fixed them. I also have 6000k xenons, all from jlevisw.com.

my website is down right so its a pain in the ass to show you some pics, but here are some:

cant find a pic on the net with my rims really shown well but they are ASA Ar1's. The M3 is my Dad's, the 328is is my bro's.

Yeah it was a little more than a year ago, probably a year and a half...can't remember when, it was shortly after we did my CDV. I had the shop measure the pads and they said i still had plenty of meat on em.

If it's just pads and rotors, I'll just let em wear out before I do anything. I'm not getting vibration on braking, just a little more noise than normal.

I got the same problem on my 97 540i. I had to replace the traction strut bushing to get it fix. For my case, I upgraded with PowerFlex bushing, make a big improvement on handling! Hope this help! ;)
