The cluster doesn't brake down very far as shown in the below diagram. If everything is in working condition and you don't want to replace the cluster making a custom piece is probably going to be your best bet.

hmm, it looks like the glass is just held in by two screws. Maybe I should post a picture for more clarification about what I'm talking about.
It's glued on, in my 94 325is. I speak from experance because the glass it falling off on mine and I just had the cluster apart last night. The cluster it's self is held in by two screws. Was that what you were talking about?
