Back on the Carnuaba vs. Polymer thread...Has anyone ever tried multiple coats of Zaino or is that simply a waste of money?

I know in some comparison tests done by www.thewaxtest.com they rated Griot's Best of Show wax behind the great PS21 wax, and initially I was impressed with Griot's Best of Show wax but not blown away. That is, until I tried Richard Griot's suggestion of putting multiple coats of BOS. Holy SHIT the results are simply amazing. One coat of BOS makes the car shiney and each additional coat brings the luster and depth to a different level. Right now my car has 3 coats of BOS applied within a 48 hour period (Griots suggest that you let the wax cure for 24 hour before applying again for best result) and although the car doesn't look shinier but the paint just GLOWS with depth and brilliance. It's like a round perfect cut vs. a heart and arrow cut, it's still the same diamon and same brilliance but a heart and arrow cut has more facets hence appear brighter...Well adding a 2nd and 3rd layer of BOS really creates the same effect, light has to bounce off 3 layers of wax and creates a very pleasing effect when viewed at different angles.

If I had some time on Friday night I'll throw on another layer of BOS and we can compare at Bimmerfest. :)

Zaino is all about layering.

With the ZFX flash curing additive, you can put down 3 layers of Zaino in a single day. You're advised to put a layer of Z6 (Speed Shine in Griot's speak) between your coats of Zaino.

The result is is that of adding "depth" to the shine.

It's unseasonably warm today... I'm going to try for 3 more layers of Zaino this afternoon.

Dan,

Sounds to me like Griot's has suckered you into that old shampoo usage ploy: Shampoo. Rinse. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Seems to me that car wax and shampoo manufacturers should make their products good enough so that you only need to apply it once in order to derive maximum benefit. Subsequent applications are a 'waste' of product, and will only result in running out of it quicker, thus causing you to by more of their product.

(Of course, I also think that my hair looks shinier and smells better after washing it 3 times every morning).

You're suppose to REPEAT when shampooing? Damn, something new you learn everyday.

But with waxes it's true, the more coats or layers, the better the shine and brilliance. Of course, a single coat will protect the car just as well as 3 coats, but man, 3 coats look so much better than 1 coat.

I'm going to have to find a way to keep the car looking good AFTER running it on the tracks...:(

If Hack's going to put on 3 coats of wax, I'm going to put on 4. Only 2 more coats to go before Bimmerfest.

Can I count the 1 coat on my wife's car too?

I just went to Griot's and under the "professional detailing advice" section, they recommend the following:

"For the ultimate in obtaining the perfect, deep, rich, dark, concours winning, new-car shine, perform the following (do not deviate):

1. Wash
2. Apply the first coat of wax. Don't worry if it's not perfect, you'll be applying lots more (how else do you think we pad our profits?)
3. Apply the second coat of wax. Don't worry if it's not perfect, you'll be applying lots more.
4. Apply the third coat of wax.
5. Remove the first three coats with a clay bar.
6. Apply the fourth coat of wax.
7. Apply the fifth coat of wax.
8. Apply the sixth coat of wax...

In my Zaino days more coats of Z2's (was that Z2? don't remember) really improved the shine. I've switched to P21S since and haven't tried putting multiple layers of P21S. I just waxed my car yesterday, maybe I'll put another coat of P21S when I get time! =)

A single layer of P21S looks damn good already though!

I'm going to ask Jon if he could set aside a section of the lot for waxed vs. polymered cars. It will NOT be comparing detailing quality, just wax and polymer jobs.
I'm up for a premium parking space. Now I'll feel compelled to find a way to clean my car before I get there. I've got about a 350 mile drive from the SF Bay Area.
