Went to the dealer to get an oil filter and identified the year and model and he asked me for my VIN number, saying that he needed that to ID the correct filter. Was he just verifying that I knew what model and year I drive, is that how dealers look up parts, or was something else going on? I suppose that would be the most accurate way of keeping up with it, but it seems like it would be more time-consuming.

German makes put the VIN in the computer for all parts, at least they always did at Mercedes too, even ordering touch up paint...there are many variations in a models life, they just like to be sure, no liability then if there is a issue. Thats a good thing...
