Considering a diesel model...I’m looking at higher mileage examples. If I remove the emissions equipment and add a tune (legal in FL), change out water pump and thermostat...anything else I should be prepared for?

Once u remove the unreliable (at high mileage) emissions equipment, u got yrself a tank. Engine and tranny will last.
Change all fluids: at, tc, diffs ~1000$, all in.
water pump+thermostat job, ~$700.
Eventually ull have to do the harmonic balancer (450$ part) and all belts+pulley and vcg on the high mileage cars. Maybe vacuum lines as diy. Keep a spare MAF handy.
Maintenance 101.
There's a few threads on diesel specifics but that's it. Nothing scary.
Enjoy.

Florida has no emissions testing, not worried about that.

Thanks for info!
Nice,

I have 12 X5d and its awesome, love it. Its also a high mileage car going back and forth between Chi-town and Miami. I would buy it again. Emissions system could be better totally agree. I already changed out EGR. Now have an oil leak but its still an awesome car to drive and have.
