hi,

Curious as to what the technical differences between the e46 steptronic and non-steptronic automatics are. My dad has a '99 E46 -- an early 323i sedan. It's a five-speed auto but without the manual program. I've driven a 2001 E46 (loaner) with step, but I found it no different in feel than the non-step auto
(left it in D the whole time, however.)

With or without manumatic, it's the best auto I've driven in my altogether brief life.
(gratuitious shot there)

thanks
jordan

Actually they're totally different. Steptronics are made by ZF and is their 5HP19, whereas non-steptronics are a General Motors 5L40E.

I believe the ZF is used in other cars but until the Caddy CTS, the 5L40E was custom-made by GM exclusively for E39 and E46 use.

If you know anything about things like Turbo 400s or 700R4s, you know ATs are one thing GM gets right.
