Hey, I was thinking of driving from Lincoln, NE to Denver, CO to get a Dinan chip installed (to remove the top speed limiter). Does this do ANYTHING to invalidate my warranty? Just curious.

Yes.
Also, I know that some dealers (VOB, for instance) will NOT buy or take cars in trade that they know have been chipped.

yes and no

i think the deal is installing a chip of any kind invariably voids warranty. well tech nothing can invalidate your warranty unless they can prove the mod had something to do with the failure. however, dinan supposedly provides a warranty taht matches bmws. so you'd effectively be warranted by dinan at that point. however, since dinan is tied to bmw, your car will be marked in bmws records as being a dinan car

Dinan boasts of their warranty, but your records will indicate that your car has been chipped. I wouldn't worry about the warranty issue so much. Some dealers are tightasses about it, but some will not care. Also, keep in mind they cannot void your warranty until they can prove that the chip was the sole cause of whatever failure the car may have.

The Dinan software warranty is LIFETIME. Meaning that if anything ever goes wrong with the software, it will be covered.

btw, since you have an Xi, your car has H rated tires. Don't go past 130 until you get Z rated tires....you could kill yourself and others...

I had no idea.

Guess I'll keep the 130 limiter until the warranty expires. I'm wondering what I should get for tires next. I'd like all weather, but something better perhaps.

From th Dinan site:

For cars covered by the vehicle manufacturer's new car warranty.

If your vehicle is currently covered by the vehicle manufacturer's new car warranty, Dinan products are warranted for 2 years, unlimited mileage or for the remaining term of the vehicle manufacturer's new car warranty, up to 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever is longer. Dinan Performance Engine and Transmission chips are guaranteed for life. Dinan's warranties are transferable when ownership of the vehicle into which the Dinan products were originally installed is sold.

To obtain service under this warranty, the vehicle must be brought, upon discovery of a defect in material and workmanship, to the workshop of any Dinan Authorized Dealer, during normal business hours. The authorized dealer will, without charge for parts or labor, either repair or replace the defective Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer's parts using new or authorized remanufactured parts. The decision to repair or replace said parts is solely the prerogative of Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer. Parts for which replacements are made become the property of Dinan and/or the original vehicle manufacturer. In all cases, a reasonable period of time must be allowed for warranty repairs to be completed after the vehicle is received by the dealer.

In all that text about the warranty, I don't see anything stating that they will cover failures that are deemed to be the fault of the modifications...
