I have a 95 318i that will ding like the door is open at random times. Of course there is not a door open and my trunk is closed. The only thing I have noticed wrong is, my thermometer is really off. It reads something like -35 and starts to climb up higher but then it resets. Could this be the "dinging" problem? What can you do to adjust the thermometer?

Your outside temperature sensor has a connection fault, when the circuit breaks, it resets the sensor and then it begins to calibrate itself before the connection fails again.

The problem will be in the brake duct (either passenger side or drivers side, not sure for the US). Go there and get under the car, look in either duct, and you will see in one of them there is a sensor moulded into the side of the interior of the brake duct. Check the wiring, you may need to repair any loose wires or do some soldering. If there is an obvious fault with the wiring, that is your issue.

If there is nothing obviously wrong, get a second hand used sensor, you could pick one up for about $30-40. Once the sensor is replaced, it may still be -35F but will climb back to normal and that may solve your issue. So you have two options.
