I get it... these strip LED daytime running lights are not everybody's cup of tea.

I really like the way they turned out, myself. I did have to turn them down though because they throw off a lot of light with those CREE LEDs!

But, it was a chore figuring out how to wire them in properly. I spent several hours and I could find nothing online to help. It seems people had either just plopped them in without wiring them up, hooked them up to their fog lamps and called it good, ran some wiring to run them off a factory rear fog switch, or installed a relay off their battery power. Yuk.

I wanted them to operate automatically and properly. One problem for accessories is that our LCI E70's do not have much in the way of Switched Accessory power easily available - under the hood, especially.

Without further ado, here is my solution which I would like to share...

This is looking behind the RH headlamp assembly. Remove the inner wheel well to get this view. You can see the large horizontal connector plugged into the back of the headlight. My wire splices are actually under black tape just ahead of this connector. Look closely and you can see my wires trailing forward and down to where the DRL Controller is tie-wrapped to the horn bracket below.

Power your DRL Controller with its Red wire going to the smaller of the two Black/Blue Stripe wires into the Right-Hand Headlight Assembly. Connect the DRL Controller's Blue wire to the very large Yellow/Blue Stripe. A Klein #11061 Wire Stripping Tool and a soldering iron makes quick & tidy work of this. fyi, do not cut your factory wiring to attach your aftermarket wiring - just push a bit of insulation apart to make a gap and solder-away! The DRL Controller's Brown ground wire is already a ring terminal which quite handily goes under the horn bracket mounting nut.

The DRL Controller has configuration jumpers for setting options. I connected Blue-to-Brown & Red-to-Green. This turns on the DRL's with the Angel-Eyes. It dims the DRL's to 50% when the headlights are on. Also, I believe I lowered the normal LED output when it is at full brightness.

Like I said, not everybody appreciates the look. I think it adds some pop to ole' Bimmer!

Not bad... not bad at all Dan! I don't mind the look myself. It seems to be more and more frequent on cars these days.

Would you be able to take a shot from the front next chance you get. I'd kinda like to see them from the front in the daytime. Thanks.

I like what I'm seeing regardless!

I just realized I'm before the refresh on our gen. So my bumper and fog lights are a little different. My fog lights sit towards the outter edge whereas yours sit towards the middle. Not sure how that would change the look for me.

Attached the two 2010 VS 2012.

The halogen fogs look poor when they are on - being a different color than the xenon headlights.

I couldn't agree more! that's why I'm going to replace that light with some 5000k or brighter to match the Xenon headlights.

And the halo rings as well. Those were a soft white those years, and didn't update until the body refresh. They couldn't spring for the higher $$ bulbs to match. The sticker on mine was only $62k and that was 2010. :yikes:

I got these from Ali express Led Relay as well for Pre LCi BMW X5 e70 2008. They look awesome and it was easy to hook up form the bonnet. My auto tech guy just removed the main headlight connection and just patched the 2 cables through one for Power and another for Headlight trigger.

My kit didn't have the side signal wire.

So these lights work on Daytime led mode and Auto option. But as soon as low beam Xenon comes on angel eyes dims but aftermarket led strip turns off. Auto Electrician told me I need to get Angel eyes coding done to increase the brightness or remove the dimming. He showed me normally it gets 12v but once headlight turn on angel eyes only get 3.8v which is not enough power for aftermarket led's to go dim or even be on at all.

But they look awesome. Highly recommend.

It worked perfectly on my Pre LCi BMW X5 E70 2008. Your instructions were exactly the same for my car as well. We patched 2 cables only Power for Drl and Trigger for low beam. Now just need to get coding done to increase the angel eyes brightness so drls won't turn off when low beam comes on.

You dont need to remove wheel or inner wheel cover to do this. Just unplug the main headlight wiring pull it up use a multi meter to find wires and patch them and connec the ground and Positive terminal and its good to go.

Don't go for this one these are just led only u also need to buy a Drl Controller(relay) kit extra with this

Looks for one that comes as a kit with Drl controller and it led drls to have 3 cables so they can blink with turn signal as well.

They look even better than the factory kit. Chrome bits on both ends make it look flush and part of the car.

Just exploring the option with Carly BMW to make them him when xenon omes on.

But they work perfectly with Daytime running light option at 0 and Auto headlight options as well.

One of the simplest mod to do and looks great.

Tomcat05,

Thanks for you detailed instructions. I followed them but am encountering an issue where the lights blink constantly when the headlight switch is in auto mode. Did you encounter this issue? I wired up the lights to the turn signal indicators based on a wiring diagram I found. Also, what did you do with the white wire on the controller?

I cannot speak to anyone else's wiring diagrams, sorry. The BMW lighting is a modulated DC output from the FRM module - it is not easily tapped into for accessories. I can only share that my particular model of X5 wired in the way I have done it works well.
