Hello

What gear do u drive inn while pulling heavy trailer? whit the GM transmission X5 Diesel.
I have heard that it is best to be in S and not D because the transmission do not produce so much heat in S.

don't know about S vs D
but
if you are pulling often
it's probably a good idea to invest in an extra cooler anyway
couldn't hurt

Having towed quite a bit I suggest the following for engine and trans longevity:

When your speed varies like stop and go traffic and around town: S

Constant speed on flat highway: D (better milage when S not needed)

Uphill on highway: S

Downhill on highway: D (unless you are constantly on brakes then switch to S to lower the gear to take advantage of some engine braking).

On snow: D with a light throttle as possible.
