7 series Drive Train Malfunction so far solved

I drive a 2009 750i.

I have been dealing with a drivetrain malfunction error for the second year, in the winter when the temperature is cold.

The dealer replaced the fuel injectors and ultimately it went away.

The errror resurfaced this year and obviously the injectors couldnt be the problem. Again, I only get the error when the temperature is cold and I left my car outside instead of the garage.

I did a lot of research online and tried the following after my research that something was probably freezing overnight.

I pressed the start button on my car without depressing the brake so that only the electrical was turned on.

Pulled the windshield wiper lever several times. Found that the water did not spray correctly. Likely because water had frozen in the spraying mechanism.

After a few pulls, water flowed freely.

Car started fine, without the error.

Just posting this after all of my frustration that it might help someone else. I will post another update in a couple weeks to see if this continues to solve the problem.

I completely agree with your comment regarding the level of service offered at BMW dealers. I traded a Lexus LS460 for my 750Li and have regretted it ever since. Not only was the Lexus more reliable, but whenever I rolled into the dealership's service lane for routine maintenance, they greeted me at my driver's door and addressed me by name (ya, I know they have technology that displays the car owner's name on their computer monitors when the car crosses their threshold, but the point is, THEY HAVE THIS TECHNOLOGY). It makes the entire visit so much more personable. I just fell victim to the "drivetrain malfunction" message YESTERDAY! The whole car started shuttering while driving only 45 mph. It was NOT what I expected from the "ultimate driving machine." Luckily, whatever the problem may be, the warranty will cover it ... until then, I'll have to slum it in the loaner 3 Series they provided. I'm counting the days!

Adam, sorry to hear about your problem. It shouldn't happen on a flagship 100K+ BMW. It sucks. How many miles do you have?

I usually start driving within 30 seconds. I also read that warming up is unnecessary and maybe even harmful. I suspect carbon deposits. Waiting and idling is also bad for the engine and environment.
I wait for the engine to stop revving before I put it in gear. Maybe "revving" isn't the correct term. There is an audible change in the engine sound about 20 seconds after ignition ... "revving" is the best way to describe it. I let the car kind of "wake up" and put it in gear right after it "revs down." No problems, until I got the DTM message yesterday driving to work. Very disheartening. I hope they are able to rectify the problem.
SBlack,

I've always waited for the car to idle down as you do with every 7 that I've owned. On the times that I may have gotten the DTM before pulling off, I would just turn the car off and restart it. Kind of like restarting a computer or your phone when it malfunctions.

When it happens/ed while driving, I would pull over as soon as I could and do the same thing. It is discouraging because one shouldn't have to feel as if their on "pins and needles" when they're starting/driving their car.

As a sidebar, I'm dealing with some white smoke coming from under my hood. I just discovered THAT when I went on a 7hr drive!
To make a long story short, the 750 is no longer my problem - but now a mostly loaded (no competition package) 2014 M6 is. Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in... Hopefully there won't be as many issues with this one.

Will be sad to see the 750 go, as aside from it's fuel system issues it was definitely the nicest and best looking car I've ever owned. Still looks brand new...

Re: Techron additive - I've actually only fueled up with Chevron 91 the entire time I owned the car, and tried Techron at around 3k miles. Didn't do much for me. I'll probably add it to the M6 every couple thousand miles anyway, as it's generally inexpensive.
Best of luck with the M6. Ours has been at the dealer for 60+ days in the first 6 months.

Oh man...well, at least we're in CA and have access to solid lemon attorneys. What issues have you had with the M6 thus far? Since it's a juiced up version of our N63 engine I guess we have to assume it inherits some of the same flaws.

One thing I wasn't prepared for is the noise these carbon ceramic brakes make. Once they've heated up from use, they are extremely loud. Work well and are really cool looking though

We are actually on our way to drop it off again this morning. Lots of little stupid little things like a loose dead pedal, squeaky drivers seat, trap door on convertible top cover that doesn't pop back up, rear window that goes up when the top is going down and numerous items that BMW broke or made up during the repair process to obviously bilk BMW corporate for more repair money. The extra repairs performed, that they falsely claim that we complained about, on our invoice when we pick the car are comical. Doesn't qualify for a lemon yet, but our dealership is working their hardest to make it so.
I wonder how many of these drivetrain faults are just the battery, I saw that Dmann has issues when it gets cold, the battery voltage drops in the cold, when the battery gets a couple years old, it just can't make it through the night
WJHughes,

You may have a valid point about the battery. I'm in Jersey and the only times that I've experienced the malfunction was when it was cold. But, my car is only 2 years old (and 2 is a couple) but that would really suck if the batteries zap out after that short amount of time.
not sure what is going on, my battery is 4 yrs old, I did some reading, normally we should get 4-5 yrs, however, if these batteries ( they have a weird glass infused mat instead of liquid. If it has ever suffered a deep discharge, it pretty much kills it(knocks several years of its life), so how do we know if it suffered a deep discharge sitting on a lot before we bought it?
I am not immune!
...Even after the CCP. Got the DTM message today on my way home. As soon as I stopped, I noticed a slight clicking on the RHS of the engine bay that was not noticeable before and the fan was revved up to what seems like max. The car was not overheating (gage was about a quarter up the spectrum), but it seemed to think it was. After allowing it to completely cool down, I restarted and only a few seconds later the fan was spinning up at max again.

Luckily I already have an appointment for maintenance tomorrow morning. I'll report back any findings.

As I mentioned on a previous post, my injectors were not replaced during the CCP. Not sure that would have anything to do with the fan though.
Update: The DTM I got had nothing to do with the items on the CCP. They found a faulty bank 2 high pressure fuel pump and replaced it. Got the car back same day.
I actually got this error for the first time ever today, I had the CCP done back in January. While taking off from a red light, got the error and then the car started shaking like crazy when I stopped. I pulled into a gas station, turned it off and turned it back on, error still came up but the car was acting fine. I tried turning it off completely and on a few more times, error would pop right up on the screen as soon as it started.

After reading this thread, the battery issue made sense to me since I have been using a portable air pump to put air in one of my tires over the past few days until my new wheels and tires arrive on Tuesday. I haven't been driving the car much and I thought maybe the use of the air pump was draining the battery and me not driving it as much wasn't recharging it. When I got home last night I hooked it up to my Ctek charger and let the battery charge fully. I came back out, disconnected the charger and turned the car on by pressing the brake and holding the start engine button...error still came on. I turned it off fully and then just pressed the starter button once without holding the brake, so the electronics came on, then I held the brake down and started the car and the error was gone. Drove it on highway and trying hard accelerations, sport, sport+ mode and car was running like a champ, no issues at all and no codes. Don't know yet if this will fully solve the problem but I drove it again today with no issues, so maybe this is a battery problem? Anyways just wanted to share for anyone who maybe had the issue.

I took my car into the dealer for it's last oil change under the factory warranty and had them check out a bunch of other stuff while they were at it (e.g. front brakes showing due for service - still had lots of life left, so needed reprogramming). I also had 3 or 4 DTMs over the last few months. They all went away after restart, so I hadn't had them look into it until now.

After replacing all of my spark plugs and checking a bunch of other stuff (fully, and very thoroughly, detailed in the notes), the tech noticed oil leaking out of one of the oil feed line banjo bolts, so he decided to check the turbos for resistance. Wouldn't you know, he found out that one of my turbos was not spinning freely (i had been 1 turbo down for who knows how long). He opened a PUMA case and got both turbos and the associated oil lines approved for replacement. Thankfully parts were in stock, so I had the car back in a day.

The car is running like a champ! Sounds and feels better than ever. I guess I didn't know what I was missing until I had it back.

Some of you might remember that I posted some disturbing dyno results a little while back (if not, I can repost here). I wouldn't be surprised if this is the main reason I was showing a ~50HP deficit from what others had posted previously.

Curious as to what kind of "Warranty" from this N63 CCP is performed are you guys being told/offered???
CCP in Europe

Hi All,

So, I have this US edition of F01 750iX (2009) equipped with the N63 engine. I read most of these forum threads and went happily to a dealer that see, this and this service bulletins are open for my car (based on it's VIN code), but I was denied, because I wasn't in the US, so the warranty is not applicable to my car. I was shocked, because of the reason of denial was the following: the car was revoked under the scope of any warranty recalls, because it was denotified as economical total loss/damage in the BMW registration system.

Right now I am facing a bit expensive engine upgrade, which I plan to photo document as detailed as I can, and will share it to here, if not a problem.
Just curious has there been a 740 reported with this issue?
I am joint the club too. Second week my alpina b7 f01 is in the bmw dealers shop. They are doing minimal effort to fix the problem hoping to save on repairs and get me in later so they can actually charge for something. Same problem as everyone drivetrain malfunction. Never had it before but the moment it got to Germany the problem showed up right away. I think BMW is actually planting this error in our cars so they can get us to drop them off at the shop and quietly fix all problems without a huge law suite. First it started with both keys suddenly low on battery. I didn't have time so just shipped my car to Germany and planned to replace it there then the malfunction kicked in right away and when I came into the store they already waited for me and had all info about my car up on the screen so it's definitely a planned sabotage.
