Manual or automatic transmission?
More likely bent clutch interlock bracket or dead starter.

The e36 does not like to turn over with a low battery. Try the easiest thing first and put the battery on a charger for a while or give it a good jump start. If you try a jump start and at first it does not work, leave the good car running for a while hooked up to the e36. A really dead battery or a car without enough juice will not let the e36 start right away.
