E36 Sunroof problems (metal cable/guide tubes?)

108 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  hornhospital
Hi all,

Yet another problem I'm hoping someone can help me out with (this seems to be one of the more uncommon ways where the sunroof fails).

As shown in the pictures below this, when opening my sunroof, the metal cables come out of the bronze guide tubes. I'm not sure if its the bronze guide tubes which are being forced off the mechanism or if the cables arent attached properly, but im hoping someones had a similar problem and repaired it as im completely lost

Picture 1 shows the bronze guide tube connected, then once it starts opening, it detatches, and then starts pushing the metal cable out

The brazed/soldered joint has broken. It has to be attached to the sunroof frame to work, otherwise, as you have discovered, the cable tube and shearh moves instead of the enclosed cable.

Thanks for the reply and explanation - Do you have any idea if its possible to rejoin them together as I was speaking to someone on FB and they said nothing worked, so they had to replace the whole sunroof

It would require complete disassembly of the affected area and a very skillful craftsman to braze the tube back in place. A whole lot of work. Up to you whether it's worth it or not, and the task of finding the craftsman to do the brazing.
