HI ALL,

Could someone advise on the replacement of the rear lower ball joints. BMW have confrimed that they both nead to be replaced. I can hear the creaking as I drive around. I have had quote sof roughly 1.5hrs per side. The parts are only Circa £35-40 for BMW parts.

Is this omething I could do at home?????

Are there any special tools required???

Cheers

No you need a special ball splitting tool to do this job. It is a fairly easy job if you have the right tools. Not a job I would do myself plus you will need a wheel alignment so best left to the steering and suspension specialist. I would not use BMW shop for this job. I would go to the local steering specialist.

Ball joints

Hi Speedo6

thanks for the advice if I am honest I guessed this. I have had a quote from BMW £458 I have also got quotes from 3 other local garages all around £320. I was just wondering if there was much to it.

Could give some further advice..... I have noticed this moring that the sat nav screen has gone green and is not blue as usual. Speaking to friends they have sid this is normaly a loose wire connection. Would you agree.

Any ideas on how to start looking at it.??

If not any ideas what would need to be replace and poss costs???

Cheers fopr help

Is this for one or both side (L + R)?
Dealer usually won't push outt he ball joint bushing (item #2 in the picture), they'll replace the whole carrier which means more expensive like $500 US here each side.
The ball joint way cheaper around $50 US each but you need a special tool to do it, the tools is around $300 US.
The problem I've seen is you need to either compress the spring during re-assembly or let the air out of the air-spring on some models. For the price they quoted you, if it's for both sides go for it.
