Hello everyone! I own an E60 550i Manual and i would like to get extra HP.
What mods would you suggest ? :

1) Are there any SC kits available now ? I know about the Esstuning kit but i cannot find it anymore.

2) I'm also looking for headers but Supersprint ones are very expensive, so i was wondering if there is another company with good headers at a better price.

3) RPI Scoop V3 for 550i - I've heard the best for this little thing, worths ?

4) What about the AFE Throttle Body Spacer? Does this thing really work?

Any help and any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

1. No SC kits available. Lack of interest from tuners when it comes to N62 engine.

2. Supersprint headers are the only ones available. Custom ones are possible but cost a lot more.

3. Not worth it. You limit air intake to the scoop, instead of allowing the entire front end to supply air. Ram air, supposedly, works only in excess of 130km/h (75mph). Supposedly!

4. aFe spacer or Dinan larger throttle body. Two options to allow for more air into the intake manifold. Difference is so minuscule, is not worth the money.

In general, the N62 engine is not worth modifying, except for software tune, K&N air filter and perhaps better sounding exhaust. Handling (lowering springs, sport struts/coil-overs, monoball, better tires (Pilot Sports), etc.) and visual (wheels, M bumpers, tint, LED lighting upgrade, etc.) is where I would spend the money to improve overall performance.

For tuning, sell 550i and buy 535i or M5...

Custom ones will cost me a lot less....about 700 Euros for the two headers and another 500 Euros for the exhaust from headers till the final backbox. So a complete Free Flow Exhaust system with headers, x-pipe,backbox ec.. everything included without cats plus fitting will cost me max 1200 Euros. My only problem is time and where to get the right numbers for the inner diameter of the headers and all the other pipes of the exhaust, that's why i was looking for something ready to buy and fit...

So far my plans are :
Headers + Full Decat Exhaust : 1200 Euros
aFe Spacer : 130 Euros
Dinan Big Throttlebody : 660 Euros
Dinan High Flow Intake System for 550i : 880 Euros
Ecu Remap On the Dyno : 600 Euros Max.

3.5K Euros. I think With all of these i should see something around 450HP.

No way. You might see whp increase but the engine isn't capable of much more than 360-375 tops without a supercharger. Even if you were lucky to find the ess supercharger you won't reach 450 hp.

He's right. The car is 360/360 stock so to get an additional 90hp with those mods will be impossible.

Even Dinan, with their Stage 2 kit (airbox, throttle body, exhaust and tune) claimed 390/374 and that was probably optimistic.

Also, be careful with custom headers. Make sure you go the measurements correct. Last thing you want to is have large primary tubes and move your power band up and lose torque. I remember using 1-3/4 primaries on a bolt on Mustang (when I should have used 1-1/2 tubes) and the car became a dog on the street. No torque and I had to rev the hell out of the motor to do anything. Really sucked.

I don't need suspension upgrades or any kind of upgrades to improve handling or braking.
The car does have BMW Sport Suspension (1,5mm Lower), With Dynamic Drive and Active Steering and i have also installed M5 E60 brakes (front + rear) with Pirelli P ZERO tyres on Hartge 19 inch wheels plus Quife LSD.
As For the Upgrades now, A good high flow full exhaust system can give you 30-35 WHP ( Supersprint and dyno proven), The Remap Can also give you another 20-25HP ( dyno proven) . Dinan TB + Dinan Intake Kit Will give another 15-20HP for sure.
I think with those upgrades i will see at least 400HP at the dyno.

It's impossible to do that. The engine, without any forced induction, can produce 360/360 maximum. There is absolutely no possibility of having more than that at the wheels. As a matter of fact, it's no where near 360/360 at the wheels either. If you can squeeze 320whp without forced induction you know you've maxed out it's performance capability. The ESS supercharger can, theoretically, give you another 100 whp which will put you at 420 whp, roughly... Do you see what I'm saying?

Nooo! I m talking about Crank HP...otherwise i would write WHP instead of HP!
Maximum crank horsepower is 360. It's impossible to increase this number (360) without forcing higher compression (supercharger or turbo). There is no way for N62B48 to go above 360hp or anywhere near 360hp at the wheels.

I know it's hard to grasp at the beginning. I was also in the same boat a while back until I understood things from a different perspective.

The car looses power between crank and wheels. You can reduce this power loss by doing headers, high flow air intake, software tune, etc. You might get as close as 320hp at the wheels, but without supercharger that's all you get...

If you were to install the ESS supercharger, you might be able to increase crank HP to 450-460 or so, but again you will loose power at the wheels and might get 420whp out of it at most... That's a generous number too.

Ether's right. You're freeing restrictions, not increasing engine HP

Hello and greetings from my garage!

I've been lurking here a bit lately because I'm fairly new to my 5er. My previous car was an e46 M3 which was a blast but I decided to let it go and get something more comfortable and stylish.

Anyway, I decided to resurrect this older thread because OP is/was looking for an ESS supercharger which has long been out of production. Even used units are very hard to find, therefore to keep everyone's hopes up I would like to share some great news.

Without keeping you in further suspense, I've been keeping in touch with ESS, more specifically, Hans Petter Kirkerod of ESS Performance Products and I've been recently informed that a supercharger for the N62B48 is in the making. They are working every hard on releasing it by the end of the year. It will cost a lot less than it's predecessor and will be much easier to install and configure.

I can't wait!

nice!

you will find that upgraded brakes, and suspension will by far out perform any bolt on mods

put the thing on urethane, and cross drill rotors with the ecs SS brake line set.... you will probably find the other half of the cars performance

I mean if you need more acceleration thats the way to go, but once this boat is doing 142mph... theres a big big difference between stock suspension and brakes and upgraded suspension and brakes

Hi Jaystyles,

If you are interested in this product, go to ESS website and talk to them as well. This will show the ESS team that more people are interested and will, perhaps, hasten this project. As a matter of fact, I urge anyone who is interested in this product, to do the same. You can opt in for a Newsletter which will keep you posted on their latest products and services.

Thank You kindly for these pointers. As a matter of fact, I've already upgraded the brakes to perform as well as my always to be missed M3. It was a tough but rewarding journey to find just the right combination of rotors, pads, lines and fluid.

I've also upgraded to monoball bushings which are very similar in performance to polyurethane bushings but in some areas a bit more superior. My greatest cherry in this project is a custom software tune done by my local performance shop.

This project also includes a custom built intake muffler with dual inlet, similar to Dinan design. Tube routing and air intake point was improved over Dinan's design. Over all, naturally speaking, some wheel horses have been freed, 18 to be exact, and a satisfying 15 pound-feet of torque have been rejuvenated as well.

Lets not forget the exhaust which was also fully built from scratch using Magnaflow components. Headers are 4-2-1 to maintain steady torque curve with high flow catalytic converters which have been moved 5 inches down stream.

Where the original Dual-in Single-out muffler resided, a high flow Dual-in Dual-out Magnaflow with an X-pipe has taken it's place. At this point two separate 2.25 pipes have been installed and complemented with high flow resonators, one on each side. As you probably imagine, it's a true quad exhaust setup, stainless from front to back.

There is a lot more goodies in this ongoing project but I'll stop for now as I don't want to bore anyone.

Good Evening and signing off from my country side garage!
