Only took a day with coffee breaks.
I bought most of the parts off eBay. Probably spent $1625 USD all up including the iPOD and some new dash trims, but because the OZ dollar is strong it worked out to be about $1500 AUD

Facelift MMI ex eBay $350
Facelift IHKA ex eBay $125
Facelift LM ex eBay $45
iPOD module ex eBay $300
Rear FOND module ex eBay $125
Dash trim new $60
CAS plate new $45
Glovebox button new $35
Facelift M-ASK ex eBay $300
Facelift M-ASK wood trim new $240

Top deal on the price. This is getting even cheaper then for people to do this! BMW iPod.jpeg
The manual says it is compatible with iPods only, it does not mention iPhones at all.
You don't need the facelift MMI for this to work.
Go to realoem.com, punch in your VIN and then look for retrofittings under Audio and you all see it is offered for your car.
Here is the link that showed it for my 2003 car. http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=GN82&mospid=47782&btnr=65_1721&hg=65&fg=95
