E70 X5 suspension problem

The X is on 92,000 kms and all of a sudden I a getting a lot of feedback from bumps in the road. Unnervingly so I must add. Is there a way to confirm the health of shocks/suspension?

Describe this 'feedback'... Bouncy?, harsh?, noisy?, etc, etc
All of those. It's bouncy and noisy. It makes noise similar to hitting a pothole when going over speed bumps.
Might need new shocks? It says you live in South Africa and I doubt they have nice roads like Europe, etc
Mine is 2007 with only 66,000Km and all of a sudden rear suspensions both sides were gone. It happened while car was parked for about 45 minutes. The car rear side was so low and it was very hard (felt every single road patch, not to mention bumps). The dealer said "ohh it's common at X5's". Even though the warranty expired but due to low mileage BMW Canada agreed to pay for the parts and I had to pay for the labor only. I appreciate their generosity but "coincidentally" every time I visit the dealer new error comes on :eek:
Yes I also have a 2007. My previous X5 E53, had a similar problem however the computer showed a warning. BMW South Africa fixed at their cost as its considered part of the motorplan.

My car has not sagged yet like my previous one. It looks normal.
Solve my problem. Got an X3.
You guys had air suspension or plain?

I had the front lower control arm bushes replaced on my previous e53 which was making clunking type noises from the front suspension. I was told at the time that this was a common issue with the front suspension on the e53. Not sure if the e70 has the same type of suspension set-up but this was a relatively inexpensive fix?
I'm getting a squeeking sound coming from driver's side front wheel well ... when I hit a bump in the road, etc. Also, the vehicle seems to sway when cornering. Only have 77,000 kms on it (2009 X5 4.8 with sport suspension, 19" wheels). This is my 4th bimmer and it sure does not handle like the others, including a 2003 X5. Am taking it to the dealer next week and wondering if the shocks/suspension are adjustable? Or just worn out? It is still under warranty for ANOTHER 3,000 KMS

Anyone, any ideas?? :dunno:

I had my sway bar go bad on my on my 2007 X5 with 50k miles on it. Same thing, BMW was nice enough to pay for the part ($1500) and I paid for the installation labor. Now I have an issue with one of the rear air shocks. Since I have a 3rd row seat, there are two air shocks left and right. Well one of them is letting the air out when car sits for too long. Then it pumps it back up, and all is good until it sits for too long again. I was told it would be close to $1000 to get it replaced at a dealership. Hopefully BMW will pickup the bill one more time :) Seems like a regular defect on 07 X5.
ard, dealer says bushings, control arms, etc. in front are all shot (at 77,00 kms) and they are going to replace .. all under warranty. I'm sure this will stop some of the tramlining. Will this eliminate some of the handling issues (float, sway) I am experiencing in the rear? They have checked the rear and say everything is tight. Also, am going to have an alignment done (non BMW shop) but the dealer says only they can do the 'steering wheel leveling'?

Your thoughts on the above? Your input is appreciated, as per usual :thumbup: (new here .. I apologize for the duplication of this post!)

When those parts are replaced under warranty, the BMW work instructions will SURELY require them to do an alignment. If the repairs are warranted, then the alignment is also covered. If they give you lip, you can try to find the actaul documents and toss it back at them...but should be covered.

While it is true that a 'never been aligned' car needs a steering angle calinration, the very small tweeks you need to do on a comntinuing basis will not require steering calibration- I'd bet money no dealer does it on a car unless it was massively damaged or had many new steering parts installed- they'll do the aligment like all the other shops

The front being whacked CAN impact how the rear feels/tracks. Take care of the front, then go from there.

Thank you sir. I'll be picking the car tomorrow and will have the goods on it. They did say that they're going to deal with the front first, and move on to the rear if I notice any abnormalities. They also ordered some trim parts that were rattling and squeeking, and updated the transmission program as I am experiencing some shift issues (light years away from the smooth ****s on my '03 x5!). Cheers.

Ard, picked up the X5 yesterday. (2009 with 75,000 kms). They installed front thrust arms and bushings re: sloppy, floaty handling... all under warranty. Rear bushings, shocks and springs all in good shape. You'd never know it was the same vehicle now .. steering is tight and tracks very nicely. No alignment done at this point ... steering wheel level as well. They also replaced some trim parts (rear d-pillar trim) and rear seat latches (all warranty) because of rattles/plastic-on-plastic vibration on bumps, etc. Did an ISPA update. The vehicle feels like it just came off the line. Hope it lasts.

Thought I'd let you know how things went for your future reference i.e. other members who value your opinion. Thanks for all the help and advice ... I'll likely be back! :eek:

How did they replace those items and NOT do an alignment???

As I said, the BMW procedure likely has 'check and algn'embedded within. They will not list it as a separate item. I'd have asked to get a copy of the results, you are permitted to have this...
